Marion (band)
Marion are an English Britpop band, formed in 1993 in Macclesfield, Cheshire. The band's classic lineup featured frontman Jaime Harding (born Jaime Brian Harding, 27th February 1975), guitarist Phil Cunningham, guitarist Tony Grantham, bassist Julian Phillips and drummer Murad Mousa. The band released two studio albums before splitting up in 1999, due to Harding's heroin addiction which saw him not rehearsing with the band that year. Although originally lumped in with the "Madchester" scene they were later seen more as a northern version of Suede and the band felt that this latter label held them back. In 2006, Harding and Cunningham recruited a new set of musicians and reformed the band. They started working on new material, having played their first live gig together as Marion in seven years on 1 April 2006 in Bath. Britpop
Britpop was a mid-1990s British-based music culture movement that emphasised Britishness. It produced brighter, catchier alternative rock, partly in reaction to the popularity of the darker lyrical themes of the US-led grunge music and to the UK's own shoegaze music scene. The movement brought British alternative rock into the mainstream and formed the backbone of a larger British popular cultural movement, Cool Britannia, which evoked the Swinging Sixties and the British guitar pop of that decade. Britpop was a media-driven focus on bands which emerged from the independent music scene of the early 1990s. Although the term was viewed as a marketing tool, and more of a cultural moment than a musical style or genre, its associated bands typically drew from the British pop music of the 1960s, glam rock and punk rock of the 1970s and indie pop of the 1980s. Rough Trade Records
Rough Trade Records is an independent record label based in London, England. It was formed in 1976 by Geoff Travis who had opened a record store off Ladbroke Grove. Having successfully promoted and sold records by punk rock and early post-punk and indie pop bands such as the Normal and Desperate Bicycles, Travis began to manage acts and distribute bands such as Scritti Politti and began the label, which was informed by left-wing politics and structured as a co-operative. Soon after, Rough Trade also set up a distribution arm that serviced independent retail outlets across Britain, a network that became known as the Cartel. In 1983, Rough Trade signed the Smiths. Interest and investment of major labels in the UK indie scene in the late 1980s, as well as overtrading on behalf of Rough Trade's distribution wing, led to cash flow problems, and eventually to bankruptcy, forcing the label into receivership. Phil Cunningham (rock Musician)
Philip Cunningham (born 7 December 1974 in Macclesfield, Cheshire) is an English guitarist who is a member of the bands Marion, New Order, Bad Lieutenant, ShadowParty and, more recently in 2020, Sea Fever. Marion Cunningham is a member of the Britpop group Marion, which formed in Macclesfield in 1993. Along with singer Jaime Harding and fellow guitarist Tony Grantham, Cunningham has writing credits for all of the band's songs. After Marion's second album, '' The Program'' (recorded with Johnny Marr), frictions within the band began to take their toll; as a result, after heading to America for a fresh start, the band went their separate ways in 1999. Cunningham joined Electronic as a touring guitarist, working again with Marr and Bernard Sumner from New Order as they promoted their third album ''Twisted Tenderness''. ''My Own Private Idaho'' is a 1991 American independent adventure drama film written and directed by Gus Van Sant, loosely based on Shakespeare's ''Henry IV, Part 1'', '' Henry IV, Part 2'', and ''Henry V''. The story follows two friends, Mike Waters and Scott Favor, played by River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves respectively, as they embark on a journey of personal discovery that takes them from Portland, Oregon, to Mike's hometown in Idaho, and then to Rome in search of Mike's mother. Van Sant wrote the screenplay in the 1970s, but discarded it after reading John Rechy's 1963 novel ''City of Night'' and concluding that Rechy's treatment of the subject of street hustlers was better than his own. ''This World and Body'' is the debut album by Marion (band), Marion released in 1996 on London Records. It reached number 10 in the UK Albums Chart. The album contained the singles "Sleep (Marion song), Sleep", "Toys for Boys", "Let's All Go Together" and "Time (Marion song), Time". The Gramophone record, vinyl LP also contained a bonus one-sided 7", 7" vinyl of a re-recording of the bands debut single, "Violent Men". An expanded three CD set and a vinyl LP of the album was released by Demon Music Group on 16 September 2016. Background and recording Marion formed during the Madchester era after Jamie Harding started a friendship with former The Smiths, Smiths manager Joe Moss. The group was named after Harding's grandmother and the real name for actor John Wayne. Shortly after this, the line-up consisted of Harding on vocals, Tony Grantham on guitar, Phil Cunningham on guitar, Julian Philips on bass and Murad Mousa on drums.
