Violence Reduction Unit
The Scottish Violence Reduction Unit is a Police Scotland initiative established in January 2005 (by Strathclyde Police) which uses a public health approach to target all forms of violent behaviour including street/gang violence, domestic abuse, school bullying and workplace bullying. National Expansion In April 2006, the Scottish Government extended the SVRU’s remit nationwide (Scotland) thus creating a national centre of expertise on violent crime. In June 2019, following the success of the Scottish VRU and implementation of a new London unit headed by Lib Peck (former leader of Lambeth council), the Home Secretary Sajid Javid announced that he was giving £35m to police and crime commissioners in 18 local areas to set up their own local violence reduction units. This would include over £3 million to set up a VRU in the West Midlands. Karyn McCluskey
Karyn McCluskey is a Scottish forensic psychologist who is the chief executive of Community Justice Scotland. She was formerly the director of the Violence Reduction Unit. Early life She was born in Falkirk and grew up in the village of Redding near Polmont. She trained as a nurse and by her late teens worked in Accident and Emergency. She continued to work in nursing while she studied for a BSc in psychology and then a master's in offender profiling. Career McCluskey worked for the West Mercia Police, before she joined Strathclyde Police as head of intelligence analysis in 2002. In 2004, the McCluskey was asked to put together a report on how to reduce rates of violence in Glasgow. The contents of report were accepted and this led directly to the Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) being created. Police Scotland ( gd, Poileas Alba), officially the Police Service of Scotland (), is the national police force of Scotland. It was formed in 2013, through the merging of eight regional police forces in Scotland, as well as the specialist services of the Scottish Police Services Authority, including the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency. Although not formally absorbing it, the merger also resulted in the winding up of the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland. Police Scotland is the second-largest police force in the United Kingdom (after the Metropolitan Police Service) in terms of officer numbers, and by far the largest territorial police force in terms of its geographic area of responsibility. Gang-related organised crime in the United Kingdom is concentrated around the cities of London, Manchester and Liverpool and regionally across the West Midlands region, south coast and northern England, according to the Serious Organised Crime Agency. Community Justice Scotland
Community Justice Scotland is an executive non-departmental public body of the Scottish Government, which is responsible for reducing reoffending. It launched in April 2017. It was established by the Community Justice (Scotland) Act 2016, replacing eight community justice authorities that were set up under the Management of Offenders etc (Scotland) Act 2005. The organisation will oversee the new local arrangements, which aims to provide a more effectively rehabilitation in the community, following convictions. As well as having a role in assisting people released from custody, it will also be concerned with the management of people convicted of crimes who are not sent to prison. Karyn McCluskey, who had been Director of the Violence Reduction Unit, was named chief executive in September 2016. Jean Couper was the initial chair. Medics Against Violence
Medics against Violence (MAV) is a Scottish Charity that is involved with education and training in schools and to a range of professionals. It was founded in 2008. History The organisation was founded in November 2008 by three Scottish Surgeons: Christine Goodall, Mark Devlin and David Koppel along with Karyn McCluskey from the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit (VRU). Their stated aims are the prevention of serious injury and death, particularly among the young people of Scotland, and to change attitudes to violence in Scotland through education and awareness raising. They had start up funding of £80,000 from the Scottish Government. MAV is a participant in the World Health Organization's Violence Prevention Alliance.
