Vinicio Salmi
Vinicio Salmi (born 3 July 1956) is an Italian former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer and racing driver from Ferrara. Salmi competed in the 1977 250cc motorcycle road racing world championship on a Yamaha. His best result was a fourth-place finish at the 1977 250cc German Grand Prix held at the Hockenheimring circuit. He competed in the FIA European Formula Three Championship part-time from 1979 to 1981 and Italian Formula Three in 1981. He raced motorcycles from 1982 until 1988. In 1989 he returned to professional racing in the American Racing Series which would later be known as Indy Lights. In 1990 he captured a win in Vancouver and finished 9th in series points despite missing the first four races of the season. He entered but failed to qualify for the 1991 Indianapolis 500. 1977 Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing Season
The 1977 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season was the 29th F.I.M. Road Racing World Championship season. Season summary Suzuki saw off a strong challenge from Yamaha to take their second consecutive 500cc crown. Angel Nieto made it three 50cc titles in a row on a Bultaco while Morbidelli would win an impressive double world championship in the 125cc and 250cc divisions. Pier Paolo Bianchi successfully defended his 125cc title while fellow countryman Mario Lega captured the 250cc championship for the tiny Italian concern. The 350cc crown went to Takazumi Katayama on a special three cylinder Yamaha built in Holland, making him the first-ever Japanese world champion. Barry Sheene made it two premier titles in a row, winning from two Americans, Steve Baker and Pat Hennen. 1992 IndyCar Season
The 1992 PPG Indy Car World Series season was the 14th national championship season of American open wheel racing sanctioned by CART ( d.b.a "IndyCar"). The season consisted of 16 races. Bobby Rahal was the national champion, his third and final career CART title. Stefan Johansson was named the Rookie of the Year. The 1992 Indianapolis 500 was sanctioned by USAC, but counted towards the CART points championship. Al Unser Jr. won the Indy 500 in the closest finish in the history of that event. Starting in 1992, and continuing through 1996, the CART organization began operating under the name IndyCar. The term IndyCar was a registered trademark of IMS, Inc., and was licensed to CART from 1992–1996. The Grand Prix of Road America, also known as the Sonsio Grand Prix at Road America for sponsorship reasons, is an IndyCar Series race held at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. For twenty-five years, the event was part of the Champ Car, CART series, with the first race being held in 1982 CART PPG Indy Car World Series, 1982. The event was put on hiatus in 2008 after the unification of Champ Car into the INDYCAR, Indy Racing League. On August 8, 2015, it was announced that the race would return beginning with the 2016 IndyCar Series season.
