Vince McGlone
Vincent Edmund McGlone (23 March 1916 – 13 March 2014) was a New Zealand seaman and television personality. He was one of the last survivors of the Battle of the River Plate and New Zealand's oldest naval veteran. Biography McGlone was born in 1916 in the Auckland suburb of Kingsland, the son of a local policeman. He enlisted in the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy in 1932 and was promoted to ordinary seaman in 1934. He served as a gunner on HMS ''Diomede'' before promotion to able seaman and transfer to HMS (later HMNZS) ''Achilles''. On the morning of 13 December 1939, McGlone was serving as a gunner on ''Achilles'' when she, alongside '' Ajax'' and ''Exeter'', engaged the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee in the Battle of the River Plate. He later served on HMNZS ''Gambia'' and saw occupation service in Japan. He retired from the navy with the rank of quartermaster in 1946. Battle Of The River Plate
The Battle of the River Plate was fought in the South Atlantic on 13 December 1939 as the first naval battle of the Second World War. The Kriegsmarine heavy cruiser , commanded by Captain Hans Langsdorff, engaged a Royal Navy squadron, commanded by Commodore Henry Harwood, comprising the light cruisers , (on loan to the New Zealand Division) and the heavy cruiser . ''Graf Spee'' had sailed into the South Atlantic in August 1939, before the war began, and had begun commerce raiding after receiving appropriate authorisation on 26 September 1939. Harwood's squadron was one of several search groups sent in pursuit by the British Admiralty. They sighted ''Graf Spee'' off the estuary of the River Plate near the coasts of Argentina and Uruguay. Devonport Naval Base
Devonport Naval Base is the home of the Royal New Zealand Navy, located at Devonport, New Zealand on Auckland's North Shore. It is currently the only base of the navy that operates ships, and has been in use as a navy base since 1841. The base consists of HMNZS ''Philomel'' (the administration centre for the base), the Fleet Support Organisation, and the Fleet Personnel and Training Organisation. God Defend New Zealand
"God Defend New Zealand" (, meaning 'New Zealand') is one of two national anthems of New Zealand, the other being "God Save the King". Legally the two have equal status, but "God Defend New Zealand" is more commonly used. Originally written as a poem, it was set to music as part of a competition in 1876. Over the years its popularity increased, and it was eventually named the second national anthem in 1977. It has English and Māori lyrics, with slightly different meanings. Since the late 1990s, the usual practice when performed in public is to perform the first verse of the national anthem twice, first in Māori and then in English. Kaikohe
Kaikohe is the seat of the Far North District of New Zealand, situated on State Highway 12 about 260 km from Auckland. It is the largest inland town and highest community above sea level in the Northland Region. With a population of over 4000 people it is a shopping and service centre for an extensive farming district and is sometimes referred to as "the hub of the north". New Zealand Service Medal 1946–1949
The New Zealand Service Medal 1946–1949 is a New Zealand campaign medal for service in Occupied Japan at the end of World War II. The medal was instituted in 1995 to recognise New Zealand military personnel who served in the occupation forces in Japan between March 1946 and March 1949. In 2002 the Royal Warrant was amended to also recognise service between September 1945 and March 1946, including service by the crews of HMNZS Gambia and HMNZS Achilles in Japanese waters. Pacific Star
The Pacific Star is a military campaign medal instituted by the United Kingdom in May 1945 for award to British and Commonwealth forces who served in the Pacific Campaign from 1941 to 1945, during the Second World War. One clasp, Burma, was instituted to be worn on the medal ribbon. Kingsland, New Zealand
Kingsland is an inner-city suburb of Auckland, the largest and most populous urban area in New Zealand. Kingsland is under the local governance of the Auckland Council.
