Vin Brown
Edward Vincent Brown (5 February 1922 – 11 May 1989) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1940s. Brown possessed exceptional pace, he was a Stawell Gift finalist in 1946, and was used on the wing when he started out at Carlton during the 1941 VFL season. In his second season Brown began playing as a key defender to fill the gap left by players who were serving in the war and was full-back in Carlton's 1945 premiership side, where he stood South Melbourne's star forward Laurie Nash. Brown was a half back flanker in Carlton's next premiership, playing most of the Grand Final on Essendon's leading player Dick Reynolds. A twisted ankle sustained in the 1948 VFL season prompted Brown to announce his retirement. Warragul
Warragul is a town in Victoria, Australia, south-east of Melbourne. Warragul lies between the Strzelecki Ranges to the south and the Mount Baw Baw Plateau of the Great Dividing Range to the north. Essendon Football Club
The Essendon Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is a professional Australian rules football club. The club plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the game's premier competition. The club was formed by the McCracken family in their Ascot Vale home "Alisa", and while the exact date is unknown, it is generally accepted to have been in 1872. The club’s first recorded game took place on 7 June 1873 against a Carlton Second 20. John Brown (14 October 1923 – 22 May 2007) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Carlton Football Club, Carlton in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL). Stephen Silvagni
Stephen Silvagni (born 31 May 1967) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Carlton Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). As the second member of three generations of Silvagnis to represent the Blues, he is regarded as one of the greatest ever full-backs to play the game and was named as full-back in the AFL Team of the Century and is an inductee in the Australian Football Hall of Fame. Prior to 1985 he captained the undefeated Marcellin College 1st XVIII that won both the 1984 Associated Grammar Schools premiership, and the coveted Herald Shield Cup then played under lights at Waverley Park. He is widely known by his nickname, "SOS" (pronounced "Soss"), standing for "Son of Serge", referring to his father, Sergio Silvagni, another great Carlton player. Sergio Valentino Silvagni (28 June 1938 – 15 July 2021) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Carlton Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL), mostly as a ruck-rover. He was the first of three generations to represent Carlton at VFL/AFL level, followed by his son Stephen and grandson Jack. Early life and family The son of Italian immigrants Giacomo Silvagni and his wife Antonia, Sergio lived with his parents and sister Milena in a single fronted dwelling in Canning Street, Carlton, very close to the famous Lygon Street precinct, the epicenter of Melbourne’s Italian community. Giacomo (also known as "Jack") emigrated to Australia in 1924 from the town of Asiago in the northern Italian province of Vicenza. Edward Valentine Brown (18 October 1891 – 8 December 1957) was an Australian rules footballer who played for St Kilda and Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Mungo Brown (1861-1911), and Margaret Ann Brown (1863-1933), née Peel, Edward Valentine Brown was born in Bendigo on 18 October 1891. He married Lucy Catherine Miller (1891-1980) in 1921. Their sons, Vincent (1922-1989), and John (1923-2007), also played for Carlton (117 games and 90 games, respectively). Football St Kilda Ted Brown played with Ararat Football Club in 1911–13, 18 games, including premierships in the 1911 and 1912 Wimmera & District Football Association. 1948 VFL Season
The 1948 VFL season was the 52nd season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 17 April until 9 October, and comprised a 19-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Melbourne Football Club for the sixth time, after it defeated by 39 points in the 1948 VFL Grand Final Replay. Premiership season In 1948, the VFL competition consisted of twelve teams of 18 on-the-field players each, plus two substitute players, known as the 19th man and the 20th man. Dick Reynolds
Richard Sylvannus Reynolds (20 June 1915 – 2 September 2002) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Reynolds is one of four footballers to have won three Brownlow Medals, the others being Haydn Bunton Sr., Bob Skilton and Ian Stewart. Revered by Essendon supporters, he was often referred to simply as "King Richard". Family The son of William Meader Reynolds (1886—1940) and Mary James Reynolds, née Thompson (1885—1941), and one of seven children, Richard Sylvannus Reynolds was born on 20 June 1915.
