Vilma Socorro Martínez (born October 17, 1943) is an American lawyer, civil rights activist and diplomat who formerly served as the U.S. Ambassador to Argentina from 2009 to 2013 under President Barack Obama. Biography Early life Vilma Socorro Martínez was born to Marina and Salvador Martínez, a Mexican-American couple living in San Antonio, Texas. She studied at the University of Texas at Austin. After receiving her bachelor's degree, Martínez went on to Columbia Law School and graduated in 1967. Vilma Sindona Eichholz (1926 - July 15, 1995) was a German-born Canadian Esperantist, teacher, and vice president of the Canadian Esperanto Association. She and her husband, Rüdiger Eichholz, were responsible for the propagation of Esperanto in Canada. Life Eichholz was born in 1926 in Silesia, Weimar Germany. After fleeing Silesia at the end of World War II, she met Rüdiger Eichholz in western Germany and married him. In the early 1950s, the pair emigrated to Canada. They had three children, who they raised as native Esperanto speakers. In 1979, Eichholz travelled to Sri Lanka and published a 12-page booklet about her experiences: ''Impresoj de esperantistino en Srilanko'' ("Impressions of an Esperantist in Sri Lanka") (Ontario, 1979). Vilma Ripoll (born 12 April 1954) is an Argentine nurse and politician. Life and times Vilma Ana Ripoll was born in Firmat, Santa Fe Province, in 1954. She enrolled at the National University of Rosario School of Medicine, and earned a degree in nursing in 1975; while a student, in 1973, Ripoll co-founded the ''Centro de Estudiantes de Enfermería'' (Nursing Student Center). Ripoll helped organize a relief mission for workers at an Acindar steel plant in Villa Constitución whose health benefits had been cut in retaliation for their electing a left-wing shop steward. She then later joined the Trotskyite Socialist Workers' Party. These activities made her a target during the subsequent Dirty War, however, and in 1977, she left her post at the government health service, PAMI, and sought refuge in Colombia.
