Villages Of Senegal
The Villages of Senegal are the lowest level administrative division of Senegal. They are constituted "by the grouping of several families or ''carrés'' in a single agglomeration.". Villages are grouped together in rural communities. They are administered by an individual entitled village chief (french: chef du village). At the time of the 1988 census there were villages in Senegal. Cercle (French Colonial)
Cercle was the smallest unit of French political administration in French Colonial Africa that was headed by a European officer. A cercle consisted of several cantons, each of which in turn consisted of several villages, and was instituted in France's African colonies from 1895 to 1946. At the bottom of the European administration the "Cercle Commander" ("''commandant de cercle''") was subject to the authority of a District Commander, and the government of the colony above him, but was independent of the Military structure (outside of Military areas, e.g. modern Niger and Mauritania prior to the Second World War). Baïla
Baïla is a village in the rural community of Suelle, Sindian, Bignona, Ziguinchor, Casamance, Senegal. History Boukout, a Jola rite of passage, took place in Baïla for the first time in 1971, but it was 36 years before it was held there again. On August 4, 2007, thousands of people gathered for the occasion. In 2002, the French commune of Houdan committed to providing Baïla with humanitarian aid, both economically and culturally. Administration Baïla is one of 16 villages in Suelle. Geography The village is located approximately 45 km from Ziguinchor and 15 km from Bignona on the N5 road that leads to Banjul, The Gambia. Podor
Podor (Wolof: Podoor) is the northernmost town in Senegal, lying on Morfil Island between the Sénégal River and Doué River on the border with Mauritania. It was the location of the ancient state Takrur. It is home to a ruined French colonial fort, built in 1854 as a centre for gold trading, and is the birthplace of fashion designer Oumou Sy, as well as musicians Baaba Maal and Mansour Seck.
