Villagers (band)
Villagers are an Irish indie folk band and the musical project of the sole long-term member, Conor J O'Brien who is a singer-songwriter based in Dublin, Ireland.. Widely known for his production, arrangements and thought-provoking lyrics, O'Brien currently releases Villagers material via Domino Recording Co. Villagers first came to prominence in 2010 with the release of their debut album, ''Becoming a Jackal''. Released to critical acclaim, the album was shortlisted for the 2010 Mercury Prize#Winners and shortlisted nominees, Mercury Prize and the Choice Music Prize. Their second studio album, ''Awayland, '' was released in 2013. It won the Choice Music Prize that year and was also shortlisted for the 2013 Mercury Prize. In 2015 Conor released Villagers' third album, ''Darling Arithmetic'', and the following year ''Where Have You Been All My Life?''—a compilation of live reworkings of some of the band's best-known tracks. Dún Laoghaire
Dún Laoghaire ( , ) is a suburban coastal town in Dublin in Ireland. It is the administrative centre of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown. The town was built following the 1816 legislation that allowed the building of a major port to serve Dublin. It was known as Dunleary until it was renamed Kingstown in honour of King George IV's 1821 visit, and in 1920 was given its present name, the original Irish form of Dunleary. Over time, the town became a residential location, a seaside resort and the terminus of Ireland's first railway. Toponymy The town's name means "fort of Laoghaire". This refers to Lóegaire mac Néill (modern spelling: Laoghaire Mac Néill), a 5th century High King of Ireland, who chose the site as a sea base from which to carry out raids on Britain and Gaul. Latitude Festival
The Latitude Festival is an annual music festival that takes place in Henham Park, near Southwold, Suffolk, England. It was first held in July 2006 and has been held every year since, apart from 2020, when it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the festival went ahead as part of the government's live event pilot scheme, and was the UK's first full-capacity festival since 2019. The festival presents musicians, bands and artists across four stages - the Obelisk Arena, the BBC Sounds Stage, the Sunrise Arena and the Alcove. The festival also includes theatre, art, comedy, cabaret, poetry, politics, dance and literature. The festival is run by Festival Republic (formerly the Mean Fiddler Group), which also runs the Reading and Leeds festivals. Electric Picnic 2009
Electric Picnic 2009 was the sixth edition of the Electric Picnic festival to take place. The three-day event took place on the weekend of Friday 4 September, Saturday 5 September and Sunday 6 September at Stradbally Hall in Stradbally, County Laois, Ireland. The festival was launched on 15 April 2009 and featured performances from artists such as Orbital, The Flaming Lips, Brian Wilson, Basement Jaxx, Madness, Klaxons, Bell X1, Fleet Foxes and MGMT. Orbital and The Flaming Lips released albums prior to their appearances. Dan Deacon was replaced in the line-up by The Jimmy Cake the week before. Build-up Takeover Prior to 2009, the festival was jointly organised between Pod Concerts and Aiken Promotions. Indie-pendence
INDIEPENDENCE is a festival "weekender" which takes place on the outskirts of Mitchelstown in northern County Cork, typically on the August Bank Holiday weekend. The festival features a variety of artists as well as comedy, spoken word, a small cinema and other attractions. INDIE, as it is known, has been shortlisted as one of the best small festivals in Europe several times as well as winning awards within Ireland. Background INDIEPENDENCE first started as a free festival in the town square in Mitchelstown, running as such in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Oxegen 2009
Oxegen 2009 was the sixth Oxegen festival to take place since 2004. It took place on the weekend of Friday 10 July, Saturday, 11 July and Sunday, 12 July at Punchestown Racecourse near Naas in County Kildare, Ireland. Kings of Leon, Snow Patrol, Blur and The Killers headlined. The festival took place over three days, with reports of a four-day festival proving unconfirmed as did rumours, described as "ridiculous", that a 6 pm curfew would be imposed on the Sunday. The festival slot was the only Irish performance by Kings of Leon in 2009. It also featured the only Irish live performance of Blur in 2009. The Killers were voted most popular band in an official poll conducted on the Oxegen website after the event. Cork ( , from , meaning 'marsh') is the second largest city in Ireland and third largest city by population on the island of Ireland. Live at the Marquee is a season of music concerts and other live performance events organised by Aiken Promotions in a large Marquee (tent), marquee in Cork (city), Cork, Ireland, every summer since 2005. For about a month in June and July, a concert is held most evenings; tickets for each night are sold separately, with varying lineups and pricing. Sparklehorse
Sparklehorse was an American indie rock band from Richmond, Virginia, led by singer and multi-instrumentalist Mark Linkous. Sparklehorse was active from 1995 until Linkous' 2010 death. Prior to forming Sparklehorse, Linkous fronted local bands Johnson Family and Salt Chunk Mary. Only one song, "Someday I Will Treat You Good," survived from these earlier bands to be played by Sparklehorse. Linkous stated that he ultimately chose Sparklehorse for a name because the two words sounded good together and it could loosely be used as a metaphor for a motorcycle.
