Village School (Unity, Maine)
The Village School is an historic former schoolhouse at 69 School Street in Unity, Maine, USA. The building, which includes one storey and three rooms, was built in 1898 and was the largest grade school in Unity until 1953. The school which represents a transitional phase between district schools and fully consolidated district, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. Description and history The former Village School is located in Unity's central village, on the north side of School Street, west of its junction with United States Route 202. It is a single story wood-frame structure, with a roughly cruciform shape set on a foundation that is built from a combination of stone, brick, and concrete block. Its main block is oriented east–west, with a hipped roof and a gabled front projection that houses the entry and the building's restrooms. Unity, Maine
Unity is a town in Waldo County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,292 at the 2020 census. The town is the service center for the northern portion of Waldo County. Outside of Waldo county, it is best known as the home of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, its Common Ground Country Fair and Unity College. Unity College was founded in 1965 to offset the economic effects of the declining chicken farming industry. As of 2007, the college is the town's largest employer. History When originally settled by Quakers, the town was known as Twenty-Five Mile Pond Plantation. The name came from its being located on a pond twenty-five miles from Fort Halifax in Winslow. United States Route 202
U.S. Route 202 (US 202) is a spur route of US 2. It follows a northeasterly and southwesterly direction stretching from Delaware to Maine, also traveling through the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. The highway has borne the number 202 since at least 1936. Before this, sections of the highway were designated U.S. Route 122, as it intersected US 22 in New Jersey. Its current designation is based on its intersection with I-395 and SR 15 in Maine.
