Los Almacigos is a town in the province of Santiago Rodríguez in the Dominican Republic, in the west of the country between the Cordillera Central mountain range and the Inaje River area. Santiago Rodríguez Province
Santiago Rodríguez () is a province in the northwest region of the Dominican Republic. It was split from Monte Cristi in 1948. The Santiago Rodríguez province has the Monte Cristi and Valverde provinces to the north, the Santiago province to the east, the San Juan and Elías Piña provinces to the south and the Dajabón province to the west. Geography The province of Santiago Rodríguez presents a rugged relief with characteristics such as mountains, forests, hills, savannas and valleys all around. To the north, and separating it from the great Cibao valley, a formation composed of xerophilous vegetation known as the "Sierra Zamba" is observed. Wide canyons formed by the two rivers that drain the area, the Cana and the Gurabo, have formed and shaped a landscape composed of narrow gorges and ravines that embellish the topography of the region. San Ignacio De Sabaneta
San Ignacio de Sabaneta is the capital and a municipality of Santiago Rodriguez in the northwestern part of the Dominican Republic. It is usually called only ''Sabaneta'' or ''Santiago Rodríguez''. History The town was founded in 1844 by Santiago Rodríguez and the brothers, Alejandro and José Bueno. The city laid in the centre of a small savanna, in Spanish, Sabaneta. In 1854, the town was elevated to the category of Military Post and in 1858 it was incorporated into a municipality of the Santiago province. Sabaneta was the centre of the fight against the Spanish soldiers during the Restoration War (1863–1865). When 1879 Monte Cristi became a province, San Ignacio de Sabaneta was made a municipality of that new province. Cordillera Central, Dominican Republic
The Cordillera Central is the highest mountain range in the Dominican Republic and in all of the Caribbean, running through the heart of the island of Hispaniola. Geography The Cordillera Central is home to the highest peaks in the Caribbean: Pico Duarte (3,098 m or 10,164 ft) (the highest point in the Caribbean), La Pelona (3,094 m or 10,150 ft) and La Rucilla (3,049 m or 10,003 ft). Connected to the smaller Massif du Nord in Haiti, it gradually bends southwards and finishes near the town of San Cristóbal on the Caribbean coastal plains. Hispaniolan Solenodon
The Hispaniolan solenodon (''Solenodon paradoxus'') is a small, furry, shrew-like mammal endemic to the Caribbean island of Hispaniola (in the Dominican Republic and Haiti). Like other solenodons, it is a venomous, insect-eating animal that lives in burrows and is active at night. It is an elusive animal and was only first described in 1833; its numbers are stable in protected forests but it remains the focus of conservation efforts. Its smaller sister species of the same genus, Marcano's solenodon (''S. marconoi'') became extinct after European colonization. The Hispaniolan solenodon and the rat-like Hispaniolan hutia live in the same habitats and are the only surviving mammals native to the island. Hispaniolan Hutia
The Hispaniolan hutia (''Plagiodontia aedium'') is a small, endangered, rat-like mammal endemic to forests on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola (split between Haiti and the Dominican Republic). It lives in burrows or trees, and is active at night when it feeds on roots and fruits. A member of the hutia subfamily (Capromyinae), it is endangered from habitat loss and introduced species, such as rats or mongoose. The Hispaniolan hutia is the only living species of the genus ''Plagiodontia''; the other two species, also native to Hispaniola, are extinct. There are two subspecies, Cuvier's hutia (''P. a. aedium'') and the Dominican hutia (''P. a. hylaeum''). Though many mammals were once native to the island, only the Hispaniolan hutia and the shrew-like Hispaniolan solenodon, which shares the same forest habitat, are alive today.
