Viktor Von Lang
Viktor von Lang (2 March 1838 – 3 July 1921) was an Austrian chemist. He is counted among the pioneers and founders of crystal physics. Career Lang earned his doctorate from the University of Giessen in 1859 with a thesis titled "Physikalische Verhältnisse kristallisierter Körper". From 1865 to 1909, Lang served as director of the ''Physikalisches Kabinett'' in Vienna. His book on introductory theoretical physics, ''Einleitung in die theoretische physik'', was published in eight editions from 1867 to 1891. With crystallographer Wilhelm Josef Grailich, he was co-author of ''Untersuchungen über die Physikalischen Verhältnisse Krystallisirter Körper'' ("Investigations into the physical conditions of crystallized bodies"). Nevil Story Maskelyne
Mervyn Herbert Nevil Story Maskelyne (3 September 1823 – 20 May 1911) was an English geologist and politician. Scientific career Educated at Wadham College, Oxford, Maskelyne taught mineralogy and chemistry at Oxford from 1851, before becoming a professor of mineralogy, 1856–95. He was Keeper of Minerals at the British Museum from 1857 to 1880. He was made an honorary Fellow of Wadham in 1873. Maskelyne was also a pioneer of photography and an associate of Fox Talbot. The meteoritic mineral ''maskelynite'' was named after him. Family Mervyn was the eldest son of Antony Mervin Reeve Story and Margaret Maskelyne, the daughter of the Astronomer Royal, Nevil Maskelyne. The family adopted the name of Maskelyne on Nevil's coming of age as they had inherited that family's estate at Basset Down in Wiltshire. Langite
Langite is a rare hydrated copper sulfate mineral, with hydroxyl, found almost exclusively in druses of small crystals. It is formed from the oxidation of copper sulfides, and was first described in specimens from Cornwall, United Kingdom. It is dimorphous with wroewolfeite. Langite was discovered in 1864 and named after the physicist and crystallographer Viktor von Lang (1838–1921), who was Professor of Physics at the University of Vienna, Austria. Unit cell Langite belongs to the monoclinic crystal class m, meaning that it has just one mirror plane, and no axes of rotational symmetry. The crystal is built up of identical unit cells stacked together, with no space in between. The unit cell for the monoclinic system has a base which is a rhombus, with sides a and c inclined at angle β. The third side b is perpendicular to both a and c. Wilhelm Josef Grailich
Wilhelm Joseph Grailich (16 February 1829, in Pressburg – 13 September 1859, in Vienna) was an Austrian physicist, mineralogist and crystallographer. Education From 1847, Grailich studied sciences at the polytechnic institute in Vienna. Career Grailich served as an assistant to Andreas von Ettingshausen in the institute of physics at the University of Vienna. In 1856 he became an assistant at the ''Hofmineraliencabinett'', where soon afterwards, he succeeded Gustav Adolf Kenngott as " kustos-adjunkt".
