Robert Vigil
Robert E. Vigil (born October 26, 1953) is an American politician from the U.S. state of New Mexico. He was twice elected New Mexico State Auditor, serving from 1991 to 1998 and was New Mexico State Treasurer from 2003 until his resignation on October 26, 2005. Arrest and conviction Vigil, his predecessor, Michael A. Montoya, and two others were indicted on 28 counts of extortion, money laundering and racketeering by a federal jury. Vigil's first trial ended in a hung jury, but was convicted in a second trial of one count of attempted extortion while being acquitted of 23 other extortion and racketeering charges. He was sentenced to 37 months in prison, serving his term in Colorado and Texas. Samuel F. "Sam" Vigil Jr. (November 20, 1929 – December 7, 2019) was an American politician who served as member of the New Mexico House of Representatives for the 70th district from 1970 to 1998. Life and career Vigil was the son of Maclovia Lujan and Samuel Vigil Sr. He attended New Mexico Highlands University. Vigil served in the United States Army as a medic during the Korean War. After being discharged, he served in the New Mexico National Guard. In 1970, Vigil was elected to represent the 70th district of the New Mexico House of Representatives. He served until 1998 and was succeeded by Richard Vigil. During his tenure in the house, he served as chair of the Educational Committee. Vigil established Luna Community College and served as its president until 1999. He was appointed to the President's Commission of Excellence of Education for Hispanic American Students by President Bill Clinton. Vigil died in December 2019 of natural causes, at the age of 90. Sergio Vigil (born 11 August 1965 in Buenos Aires) is an Argentine former field hockey player, who later became a coach in his sport. In 1997 he was appointed as the head coach of the Argentine Women's Team, that won the silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney under his guidance. Martina Vigil Montoya (1856–1916) was a Native American ceramics painter from San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico. She frequently collaborated with her husband and partner Florentino Montoya. They introduced new techniques and materials to other potters. Julian Martinez often copied their designs and in 1895 Maria Martinez called Martina the finest contemporary potter. They moved from San Ildefonso to Cochiti Pueblo, the birthplace of Martina's father, between 1902 and 1905. While the bentonite slip employed in Cochiti pottery gave it a soapy appearance, Southwestern ceramics expert Jonathan Batkin considers the Montoyas' work from this period to be stylistically San Ildefonso.
