View Of Toledo
''View of Toledo'' (original title ''Vista de Toledo''), is one of the two surviving landscapes painted by El Greco, along with '' View and Plan of Toledo''. ''View of Toledo'' is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. ''View of Toledo'' is among the best known depictions of the sky in Western art, along with Vincent van Gogh's ''The Starry Night'' and the landscapes of J. M. W. Turner and Claude Monet. Art historian Keith Christiansen included ''View of Toledo'' among the artist's most ambitious masterpieces, describing it as one of Western art's most celebrated landscapes. Historical context Dating Art historians, specifically Harold Wethey, have debated the exact dating of ''View of Toledo''. There was some debate among art historians due to early literature that wrote about El Greco. The early literature that Walter Liedtke mentions in "Three Paintings by El Greco," suggests that the ''View of Toledo'' was painted after 1600 and shortly before El Gre ...

El Greco
Domḗnikos Theotokópoulos ( el, Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος ; 1 October 1541 7 April 1614), most widely known as El Greco ("The Greek"), was a Greek painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. "El Greco" was a nickname, and the artist normally signed his paintings with his full birth name in Greek letters, (), often adding the word (), which means Cretan. El Greco was born in the Kingdom of Candia (modern Crete), which was at that time part of the Republic of Venice, Italy, and the center of Post-Byzantine art. He trained and became a master within that tradition before traveling at age 26 to Venice, as other Greek artists had done.J. Brown, ''El Greco of Toledo'', 75–77 In 1570, he moved to Rome, where he opened a workshop and executed a series of works. During his stay in Italy, El Greco enriched his style with elements of Mannerism and of the Venetian Renaissance taken from a number of great artists of the time, notably Tinto ...

Castillo De San Servando
The Castle of San Servando is a medieval castle in Toledo, Spain, near the Tagus River. It was begun as a monastery, occupied first by monks and later by the Knights Templar. In 1874 the castle was named a national monument. The fortress was depicted in El Greco's painting ''View of Toledo''. Lying at the opposite bank of the Tagus than the main urban core, it is connected to the Santa Bárbara residential area through the Cuesta de San Servando. Monastery Benedictines Evidence exists of an ancient monastery attached to a basilica of the same name, possibly founded in the 7th century. In 1080, Cardinal Richard of St. Victor, a monk of the ancient Abbey of St. Victor in Marseille, was sent as the legate of Pope Gregory VII to the Council of Burgos held that year. One of his mandates was to ensure the adoption of the Roman Rite, replacing the ancient Mozarabic Rite used by the Christians of Iberia for centuries. He carried specific instructions for the restoration of San Servando ...

Paintings By El Greco
Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a solid surface (called the "matrix" or "support"). The medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush, but other implements, such as knives, sponges, and airbrushes, can be used. In art, the term ''painting ''describes both the act and the result of the action (the final work is called "a painting"). The support for paintings includes such surfaces as walls, paper, canvas, wood, glass, lacquer, pottery, leaf, copper and concrete, and the painting may incorporate multiple other materials, including sand, clay, paper, plaster, gold leaf, and even whole objects. Painting is an important form in the visual arts, bringing in elements such as drawing, composition, gesture (as in gestural painting), narration (as in narrative art), and abstraction (as in abstract art). Paintings can be naturalistic and representational (as in still life and landscape painting), photographic, abstract, narrative, ...

View And Plan Of Toledo
''View and Plan of Toledo'' (Spanish: ''Vista y plano de Toledo'', ca. 1608) is a landscape painting by El Greco. The image is notable for its juxtaposition of the view of Toledo with the ''trompe l'oeil'' map of the city's streets. In the composition, El Greco also included an allegory of the Tagus River, a scene of the Virgin Mary placing a chasuble on Saint Ildefonsus, and an elevation of the Tavera Hospital floating on a cloud. It was probably originally commissioned by and is currently preserved in the El Greco Museum in Toledo, Spain. Analysis ''View and Plan of Toledo'' symbolically displays the sanctity and the Spanish history of Toledo. The painting can thus be interpreted in light of the propaganda campaigns the city of Toledo began to undertake in the late sixteenth century in attempt to convince Philip II and his court to return to Toledo from Madrid. At the same time, the painting has decorative use and can be considered part of the paintings El Greco and his studi ...
