Vietnamese people in the Czech Republic, including citizens and non-citizens, are the third-largest ethnic minority in the country overall (after the Slovaks and Ukrainians), numbering more than 83,000 people according to the 2011 census. It is the third-largest Vietnamese diaspora in Europe, and one of the most populous Vietnamese diasporas of the world. According to the 2001 census, there were 17,462 ethnic Vietnamese in the Czech Republic. The Vietnamese population has grown very rapidly since then, with the Czech Statistics Office estimating that there were 62,842 Vietnamese citizens residing in the Czech Republic in December 2020 (not including those with Czech citizenship). Nguyen, the most common Vietnamese surname, is now the 9th most common surname in the entire country. Foreign workers or guest workers are people who work in a country other than one of which they are a citizen. Some foreign workers use a guest worker program in a country with more preferred job prospects than in their home country. Guest workers are often either sent or invited to work outside their home country or have acquired a job before leaving their home country, whereas migrant workers often leave their home country without a specific job in prospect. Tens of millions of people around the world operate as foreign workers. Chinese people in the Czech Republic form one of the country's smaller migrant communities. Migration history A few Chinese settled in Czechoslovakia prior to World War II. They consisted largely of overland migrants from Wenzhou, Zhejiang. Most were Catholics. They came largely as travelling salesmen to the Bohemia region; some married local women and settled down. Up to the 1940s, a few more Chinese arrived, for example as acrobats with travelling circuses. However, most of them left the country when the war broke out. The few who did remain fled to Western Europe after the Communist takeover, when their businesses were confiscated. Thai Dai Van Nguyen (born 12 December 2001) is a Czech chess Grandmaster of Vietnamese descent. Biography Thai Dai Van Nguyen's father is a Vietnamese businessman. In 2011, Thai Dai Van Nguyen won the Czech Youth Chess Championship in the U10 age group. After that, he twice in a row won the Czech Youth Chess Championship in the U12 age group (2012, 2013). In 2016, Thai Dai Van Nguyen was awarded the FIDE International Master (IM) title and received the FIDE Grandmaster (GM) title two years later. At just 16, Thai Dai Van Nguyen became the youngest chess grandmaster in the Czech Republic. Filip Nguyen (born 14 September 1992) is a Czech professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Slovácko. Club career Nguyen played youth football with Loko Vltavín and Sparta Prague, joining the latter in 2012.
