Vidovdansko Naselje ( sr, Видовданско Насеље) is an urban neighborhood of the city of Novi Sad, Serbia. Name Name of the neighborhood derived from Vidovdan, the Serbian veneration of Saint Vitus, thus the English translation of the settlement's name would be "the Saint Vitus day's settlement". Saint Vitus is also the patron saint of the neighborhood and stone cross dedicated to him was erected in 1929. Location Vidovdansko Naselje is located in northern part of Novi Sad, between Klisa in the west, Salajka in the south, Mali Beograd in the east, and Slana Bara in the north. History During NATO bombing of Novi Sad in 1999, civilian residential buildings in Vidovdansko Naselje were devastated by NATO bombs. Features Well known Najlon market (''Najlon pijaca'' in Serbian) is located in Vidovdansko Naselje. Vidovdan ( sr-cyr, Видовдан, lit. "Saint Vitus Day") is a Serbian national and religious holiday, a ''slava'' (feast day) celebrated on 28 June (Gregorian calendar), or 15 June according to the Julian calendar. The Serbian Church designates it as the memorial day to ''Saint Prince Lazar and the Serbian holy martyrs'' who fell during the Battle of Kosovo against the Ottoman Empire on 15 June 1389 (according to the Julian calendar). It is an important part of Serb ethnic and Serbian national identity. History Vidovdan (''Saint Vitus Day'') is celebrated on June 28 and is considered a sacred holiday for Serbs as several important events are linked to the date. During the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, aerial bombing was carried out against the second largest Yugoslav city of Novi Sad. According to NATO press releases, the bombing targeted oil refineries, roads, bridges, and telecommunications relay stations, facilities which had military uses. The bombing of the city caused great damage to local civilians, including severe pollution and widespread ecological damage as well as lasting consequences for the well-being of the population. Klisa ( sr, Клиса) is an urban area of the city of Novi Sad, Serbia. Name Its name derived from Latin word "ecclesia", meaning "church place". During Ottoman rule, the Serb population used word "klisa" to designate places where ruins of the church buildings were located.
