Vaikom Muhammad Basheer
Vaikom Muhammad Basheer (21 January 1908 – 5 July 1994), popularly referred to as Beypore Sulthan, was a writer of Malayalam literature. He was a writer, humanist, freedom fighter, novelist and short story writer, noted for his path-breaking, down-to-earth style of writing that made him equally popular among literary critics as well as the common man. His notable works include '' Balyakalasakhi'', ''Shabdangal'', ''Pathummayude Aadu'', ''Ntuppuppakkoranendarnnu'', ''Mathilukal'', ''Janmadinam'' and ''Anargha Nimisham'' and the translations of his works into other languages have earned him worldwide acclaim. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honor of the Padma Shri in 1982. He was also a recipient of the Sahitya Academy Fellowship, Kerala Sahitya Academy Fellowship, and the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story. He was a recipient of the Vallathol Award in 1993. Karuvattu Mana Vasudevan Namboothiri (born 13 September 1925), better known simply as Namboothiri, is an Indian painter and sculptor, known for his line art and copper Repoussé and chasing, relief works. He has done illustrations for many Malayalam writers such as Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai, Thakazhy Shivasankara Pillai, Kesavadev, M. T. Vasudevan Nair, Uroob, S. K. Pottekkatt, Edasseri Govindan Nair, and V.K.N. and is reported to be one of the most prolific literary illustrators in the world. He is a former chairman of the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi. The Akademi awarded him the Raja Ravi Varma Puraskaram, Raja Ravi Varma Award in 2003. He is also a recipient of the Kerala State Film Award for Best Art Director. Poovan Pazham
"Poovan Pazham" ( ml, പൂവൻപഴം ; en, italic=yes, Poovan Banana) is a short story written by Vaikom Muhammad Basheer and published in 1948 in the collection '' Viddikalude Swargam'' (Fool's Paradise). It is one of the most popular of Basheer's stories. It was adapted into a telefilm of the same name by P. Balachandran. Plot summary The story is about Abdul Khader Sahib and his wife Jamila Beebi. Jamila is a B.A. degree holder, while Abdul Khader who is the rowdy of the town has only studied up to school final. Abdul Khader married Jamila, despite objections from their parents and the community, after confessing his love for her. However, he struggles to live up to her expectations of becoming a gentleman and changing his behaviour. One day, Jamila asks Abdul Khader to bring her some poovan bananas.
