Victorio García De Zúñiga
Victorio (Bidu-ya, Beduiat; ca. 1825–October 14, 1880) was a warrior and tribal chief, chief of the Warm Springs band of the Tchihendeh (or Chiricahua#bands, Chihenne, often called Mimbreño) division of the central Apaches in what is now the United States, American states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and the Mexico, Mexican states of Sonora and Chihuahua (state), Chihuahua. In Victorio's War from September 1879 to October 1880, Victorio led a band of Apaches, never numbering more than 200 men, in a running battle with the U.S. and Mexican armies and the civilian population of New Mexico, Texas, and northern Mexico, fighting two dozen skirmishes and battles. He and most of his followers were killed or captured by the Mexican army in the Battle of Tres Castillos in October 1880. War leader and chief Victorio grew up in the Chihenne band. Apache People
The Apache () are a group of culturally related Native American tribes in the Southwestern United States, which include the Chiricahua, Jicarilla, Lipan, Mescalero, Mimbreño, Ndendahe (Bedonkohe or Mogollon and Nednhi or Carrizaleño and Janero), Salinero, Plains (Kataka or Semat or "Kiowa-Apache") and Western Apache ( Aravaipa, Pinaleño, Coyotero, Tonto). Distant cousins of the Apache are the Navajo, with whom they share the Southern Athabaskan languages. There are Apache communities in Oklahoma and Texas, and reservations in Arizona and New Mexico. Apache people have moved throughout the United States and elsewhere, including urban centers. The Apache Nations are politically autonomous, speak several different languages, and have distinct cultures.
