Victorian Historical Journal
The ''Victorian Historical Journal'' is a biannual peer-reviewed academic journal covering the history of the Australian state of Victoria. It is the "official journal of record and scholarly publication" of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria. The journal was first published in 1911 as the ''Victorian Historical Magazine'' and has a long-standing policy of encouraging well-researched papers by non-professional historians. Its early editions have many articles by Victorian pioneers who had first-hand experience of the events they describe from the formation of the colony and later state of Victoria. The early editions of the journal up to 1954 have been digitised and can be found on the State Library of Victoria's website. History Of Victoria (state)
This article describes the history of the Australian colony and state of Victoria. Before British colonisation of Australia, many Aboriginal peoples lived in the area now known as Victoria. A couple of years after the first Europeans settled there, in September 1836 the area became part of the colony of New South Wales, known as the District of Port Phillip. From 1851 until 1901 it became the Colony of Victoria, with its own government within the British Empire. In 1901 it became a state of the new Commonwealth of Australia. Aboriginal people have inhabited Victoria for about 40,000 years, living a semi-nomadic life that included fishing, hunting, gathering, and farming eels. The Keilor Archaeological Site, dated to about 31,000 years ago, is one of the earliest sites of human habitation in Australia. Richard Broome
Richard Laurence Broome, (born 1 October 1948) is an Australian historian, academic, and emeritus professor of history at La Trobe University, Melbourne. He is known as an authority on Aboriginal history in Australia. In 2007 Broome's book ''Aboriginal Victorians: A History Since 1800'' won the Victorian Community History Awards for Best Print / Publication. Victoria is a state in southeastern Australia. Judith Smart
Judith Smart (born 20 October 1950) is an Australian social historian and feminist. Early life and education Born in Melbourne, Victoria on 20 October 1950, Smart completed her secondary education at Mac.Robertson Girls' High School. She graduated from Monash University with a BA (1971) and DipEd (1972). Returning to Monash she completed a PhD with the title "War and the concept of a new social order: Melbourne 1914–1915" in 1992. Career On graduation, Smart spent 1973 teaching at Sandringham Technical School. The following year she joined Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (now RMIT University), over the years rising to associate professor in 2003. Smart retired in 2005 but continued her association with RMIT University initially as adjunct professor and later honorary associate professor.
