The Victorian Allied Health Professionals Association (VAHPA) is the trading name for a trade union in the state of Victoria, Australia. VAHPA forms Branch No. 3 of Health Services Union Victoria (HSU Vic). VAHPA has around 5,000 members covering health professionals working in allied health professions in the public, community and private healthcare sectors. These professions include Medical Imaging Technologists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Radiation Therapists and others. History VAHPA was originally a state registered trade union in Victoria. The union had a period of slow and steady growth during the early 1980s.. The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU), originally the Australasian Council of Trade Unions, is the largest peak body representing workers in Australia. It is a national trade union centre of 46 affiliated trade union, unions and eight trades and labour councils. The ACTU is a member of the International Trade Union Confederation. Victorian Legislative Council
The Victorian Legislative Council (VLC) is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria, Australia, the lower house being the Legislative Assembly. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The Legislative Council serves as a house of review, in a similar fashion to its federal counterpart, the Australian Senate. Although, it is possible for legislation to be first introduced in the Council, most bills receive their first hearing in the Legislative Assembly. The presiding officer of the chamber is the President of the Legislative Council. Stephen Jolly (politician)
Stephen Jolly (born 1962) is an Australian politician, socialist activist, author and construction worker. He is a councillor in the City of Yarra and previously was the President and lead candidate for the Victorian Socialists during the 2018 state election. Following allegations of family violence, Jolly was suspended from the Victorian Socialists pending an investigation, leading him to resign from the party. Biography Jolly was born in London to a single Irish mother who had left Ireland due to concerns regarding the predominant Catholic Church's attitude towards single parents. He was raised in Ireland by his grandparents in a public housing estate. He moved to study at the University of Cape Town in 1977. The City of Yarra is a local government area (LGA) in Victoria, Australia in the inner eastern and northern suburbs of Melbourne. Victorian Trades Hall is the headquarters of the Victorian Trades Hall Council. It is located on the corner of Lygon Street and Victoria Street, just north of the Melbourne central business district, in the suburb of Carlton, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is the world's oldest trade union building. History In 1856 the Melbourne Trades Hall Committee was formed and received a grant of land from premier John O'Shanassy to build the Melbourne Trades Hall. The original Trades Hall was opened in May 1859, built by workers as an organising place for the labour movement in Melbourne, and as a medium to educate workers and their families.
