Victoria Wyatt
Victoria Wyatt (born August 3, 1956) is an ethnographer and art historian specializing in Northwest Coast art, Northwest Coast Native American art. Wyatt was educated at Kenyon College (BA) and Yale University (MA, M.Phil., Ph.D.). She is a professor in the Department of History in Art at University of Victoria, in British Columbia, Canada. Her books include ''Shapes of Their Thoughts: Reflections of Culture Contact in Northwest Coast Indian Art'', and ''Images from the Inside Passage: An Alaskan Portrait by Winter and Pond''(with Lloyd Winter and Percy Pond).Reviews of ''Images from the Inside Passage'': * * * Wyatt taught previously at the University of Washington in Seattle, and served as curator of the Northwest Coast Art collection at the university's Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture. Ethnography (from Greek ''ethnos'' "folk, people, nation" and ''grapho'' "I write") is a branch of anthropology and the systematic study of individual cultures. Ethnography explores cultural phenomena from the point of view of the subject of the study. Ethnography is also a type of social research that involves examining the behavior of the participants in a given social situation and understanding the group members' own interpretation of such behavior. Ethnography in simple terms is a type of qualitative research where a person puts themselves in a specific community or organization in attempt to learn about their cultures from a first person point-of-view.
