Hotel Victoria (Toronto)
Hotel Victoria is a historic boutique hotel located at 56 Yonge Street in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The hotel opened in 1909 as the Hotel Mossop and was celebrated for being a fireproof building, constructed after Toronto's Great Fire of 1904. It has been designated a Heritage Building by the City of Toronto government. Great Fire of Toronto and initial construction The hotel was built after Toronto's Great Fire of 1904, which destroyed over 100 buildings in downtown Toronto and caused over $10 million worth of damage. Following the fire, in 1906, Frederick Mossop, a former hotel clerk, purchased the site at 56 Yonge Street with the intention of building a hotel. Mossop hired Canadian architect J.P. Hynes to design the building, which was intended from the outset to be completely fireproof. The Royal Victoria Hotel
The Royal Victoria Hotel is a former hotel situated in Newport, Shropshire. It dates back to 1830 and gains its name from Queen Victoria, who as Princess Victoria of Kent visited the hotel in 1832 and who gifted the hotel with a pair of tortoise shells to commemorate the visit. The building has been extended over time and operated as a hotel, bar and restaurant before it finally closed in 2015. History It was originally called the Union, and built on the site of the Bear Inn. Local people subscribed to the building project of the new Union, which was to be the principal hotel in the town, built with the fashionable five bays and two and a half storeys surmounted by a very shallow pediment of the period. William Williams (brewer)
William Williams (1803 – 26 April 1858) was an early settler in the Province of South Australia, known for establishing the Walkerville Brewery and for his work on the Kaurna language. He was Deputy Colonial Storekeeper for some time. Early days in South Australia Williams arrived in the new colony at Holdfast Bay on 8 November 1836 aboard , one of the ships of the "First Fleet of South Australia". On 5 January 1837 Williams was appointed as a constable, along with Joseph Lee, at an annual salary of £30, with William Archer Deacon as chief constable. He was sent with a commission comprising George Stevenson (secretary to Governor Hindmarsh), Thomas Bewes Strangways and Henry Jickling, to investigate disturbances on Kangaroo Island which had occurred in September 1836. The Victoria Hotel is a major hotel in Amsterdam, Netherlands. It is on the corner of the Damrak and Prins Hendrikkade, close to Amsterdam Centraal station. The Victoria Hotel is one of the oldest hotels in The Netherlands. The hotel opened on 19 August 1890 and was designed by J.F. Henkenhaf. It was the first hotel in the country to have electric lighting. During the years it has attracted well-known clientele, including Billy Graham, Louis Armstrong, Zarah Leander, Fats Domino, Glenda Jackson and more recently Katy Perry, Anastacia, Marilyn Manson and Iron Maiden. The building is designed around two older properties, Nos. 45 - 47 Prins Hendrikkade, that the hotel was unable to purchase owing to high prices. The Victoria Hotel, or The Vic as it is commonly known, is a heritage listed pub located in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. History The Victoria Hotel was built by Ellen Ryan, one of the Territory's wealthiest women, who owned land and several mining leases. Victoria Hotel (Toodyay)
The Victoria Hotel is located on Stirling Terrace in Toodyay, Western Australia. It was classified by the National Trust of Australia in 1977 and added to the Register of National Estates in 1980. History The village of Toodyay was established in 1836 and in 1864 George Hasell constructed a single storey building here for James Thomas Woods. The bricks were made at the riverside and the lime was carried from Clackline. Woods ran a store on the site and obtained a storekeeper's gallon licence. In 1875 Woods added eight rooms to the store and from 1880 provided a venue for dances in the "long room". In 1882 Woods applied for a Billiard and Bagatelle License. In 1888 Woods converted the store into a licensed premises, which he called the Victoria Hotel. In 1892 Charles Corpaccioli leased the Victoria Hotel from J.T. Woods for a yearly rental of £100.
