Victoria Holbrook
Victoria Rowe Holbrook is an American scholar and translator of Turkish literature and language. She studied at Harvard and Princeton, obtaining a PhD from the latter in 1985. Her subject was Near Eastern Studies. She won numerous fellowships and research grants in her academic career. She was attached to Ohio State University from 1987 to 2005, also teaching at Bilkent University, Koç University, and Boğaziçi University in Turkey. Her book, ''The Unreadable Shores of Love: Turkish Modernity and Mystic Romance'', won the Turkish Studies Association M. Fuat Köprülü Book Prize. She is best known today for her translation of Orhan Pamuk's novel ''The White Castle'', which won the inaugural Independent Foreign Fiction Prize. Turkish Literature
Turkish literature ( tr, Türk edebiyatı) comprises oral compositions and written texts in Turkic languages. The Ottoman and Azerbaijani forms of Turkish, which forms the basis of much of the written corpus, were highly influenced by Persian language, Persian and Arabic literature,Bertold Spuler''Persian Historiography & Geography''Pustaka Nasional Pte Ltd p 69 and used the Ottoman Turkish alphabet. Cemalnur Sargut is a Turkish Sufi, a leader of the Rifa'i order, author, and Islamic scholar. Biography Cemalnur Sargut was born to Meskure Sargut and Omer Faruk Sargut in 1952 in Istanbul. Sargut's mother was a disciple of Turkish Sufi master Ken'an Rifa'i. She attended Kadikoy High School for Girls and studied chemical engineering at the National Academy of Architecture and Engineering in Istanbul. As a young woman, Sargut was a student of Sufi mystic and writer Samiha Ayverdi. She worked as a chemistry teacher for twenty years. Sargut is a scholar of Ken'an Rifa'i, although she never met him in person. She has studied the works of Ibn 'Arabi, Misri Niyazi, Abu Bakr al-Shibli, Sadr al-Din al-Qunawi, Abd al-Karim al-Jili, Ahmad al-Rifaʽi, and Rumi. Kenan Rifai
Kenan (also spelled Qenan, Kaynan or Cainan) (; ar, كِنَاْنْ, Keynān; grc-x-biblical, Καϊνάμ, Kaïnám) is an Antediluvian patriarch first mentioned in the Book of Genesis in the Hebrew Bible. In scriptures According to Genesis 5:9–14, Kenan was a son of Enosh and a grandson of Seth. Born when Enosh was 90 years old, Kenan fathered Mahalalel when he was 70 years old. Other sons and daughters were born to Kenan before he died at 910 years of age (when Noah was aged 179 as per the Masoretic chronology). According to the Book of Jubilees, Kenan's mother was Noam, wife and sister of Enosh; and Kenan's wife, Mualeleth, was his sister. He is also mentioned in the Genealogy of Jesus in Luke 3:36–37.
