Victor Masayesva Jr.
Victor Masayesva Jr. (born 1951) is a Hopi filmmaker, video artist, and photographer. Masayesva's artistic career promotes Hopi culture. The majority of his films are in the Hopi language. Early life and education Masayesva was born on the Hopi Reservation of Arizona and grew up in Hotevilla, Arizona. As a teenager, Masayesva was recruited to attend the Horace Mann School in New York. He later studied Hopi ceremonies and English at Princeton University and pursued graduate studies in English and photography at the University of Arizona. Career Following his studies, Masayesva became the director of Hotevilla's Ethnic Heritage Program, where, in 1980, he created a program to teach Hopi language. In 1982, the documentary short ''Hopiit'' was created from footage he had shot during the Ethnic Heritage program. Hotevilla, Arizona
Hotevilla-Bacavi (Hopi language, Hopi: Hotvela-Paaqavi; also known as Third Mesa) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Navajo County, Arizona, Navajo County, Arizona, United States, on the Hopi Reservation. The population was 957 at the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census. History Hotevilla was first settled by the "hostiles", a group of Hopi residents who were forced out of nearby Oraibi, Arizona, Oraibi in the 1906 Oraibi Split due to ideological differences over European cultural influences by recently arrived settlers, soldiers and missionaries, influences against which the hostiles were opposed. Later attempts to reintegrate displaced residents resulted in another split to the settlement of Bacavi, which later joined with Hotevilla to create a unified settlement. Hotevilla is mentioned by D. Native American Film And Video Festival
The Native American Film and Video Festival was a noncompetitive showcase of film, video and audio productions. It was held biennially in New York City from 1997 to 2011. Each festival screened between 50 and 80 documentaries, short features and animations, introduced by their producers and members of the native communities represented. Works to be featured in a given festival were chosen by a team of selectors made up of media makers and cultural activists from among indigenous peoples of the Americas and the program staff of the Film and Video Center of the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of the American Indian. Hopi People
The Hopi are a Native American ethnic group who primarily live on the Hopi Reservation in northeastern Arizona, United States. As of the 2010 census, there are 19,338 Hopi in the country. The Hopi Tribe is a sovereign nation within the United States and has government-to-government relations with the United States federal government. Particular villages retain autonomy under the Hopi Constitution and Bylaws. The Hopi language is one of 30 in the Uto-Aztecan language family. San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) was a private college of contemporary art in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1871, SFAI was one of the oldest art schools in the United States and the oldest west of the Mississippi River.
