Victor E. Engstrom
Victor E. Engstrom (20 October 1913 – July 1, 2000) was an American philatelist known for his knowledge and collections of stamps of Nordic countries. Background Engstrom came from Montclair, New Jersey He was an Army veteran of World War II with the rank of colonel and served in military intelligence. He graduated from Lehigh University in 1936. He retired as president of a major building firm founded by his father. Collecting interests Victor Engstrom was a student of postage stamps and postal history of Nordic countries and their possessions. He had a world-famous reputation for his knowledge and collection of postage stamps and postal history of the Danish West Indies. Philatelic activity Victor Engstrom was a member of the Scandinavian Collectors Club, where he established the Danish West Indies Study Unit and wrote extensively on the Danish West Indies in the unit's journal. The Scandinavian Collectors Club is a United States-based philatelic society dedicated to the collection and study of the postage stamps and postal history of the Scandinavia region, including the geographical regions of Åland, Aunus, the Danish West Indies, Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Karelia, North Ingermanland, Norway, Slesvig, and Sweden. History The club was founded in 1935 in New York City as the Finnish-American Stamp Club. On February 13, 1942, the club changed its name to the Scandinavian Collectors Club of New York, and, in 1959, it changed its name again to Scandinavian Collectors Club and chapters were formed. On April 26, 1960, the club was incorporated in the state of Illinois and operated in the Chicago, Illinois, area. Stamp collecting is the collecting of postage stamps and related objects. It is an area of philately, which is the study (or combined study and collection) of stamps. It has been one of the world's most popular hobbies since the late nineteenth century with the rapid growth of the postal service, as a never-ending stream of new stamps was produced by countries that sought to advertise their distinctiveness through their stamps. Collecting Stamp collecting is generally accepted as one of the areas that make up the wider subject of philately, which is the study of stamps. American Philatelic Society
The American Philatelic Society (APS) is the largest nonprofit stamp collecting foundation of philately in the world. Both the membership and interests of the society are worldwide. History The organization, originally named the ''American Philatelic Association'', was established on September 14, 1886 in New York City, and the following day elected John K. Tiffany as its first president. Voting membership was granted to 219 individuals who paid two bits (25¢) for the privilege. The organization's name was changed to its present name for a few months in 1897, then back, then permanently in 1908. Society membership reached over 4,000 in 1940, and included U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes. At the 1942 APS convention, board member Donald Lybarger argued for the creation of a central office near the geographic center of the philatelic community, but not in a large city. Carl Pelander Award
Carl Einar Pelander (October 18, 1893 – February 16, 1966) was a stamp dealer and auctioneer who was an expert on postage stamps and postal history of the Scandinavian countries of Denmark, Greenland, Iceland, Danish West Indies, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Collecting interests Pelander started collecting stamps as a youth, and quickly specialized in collecting those of the Scandinavian countries. Pelander was one of the founders of New York City's Finnish-American Stamp Club in 1935 and was the first member to be named an Honorary Life Member. The club was later renamed the Scandinavian Collectors Club of New York, and then again later as Scandinavian Collectors Club. Pelander was very active in the organization, helping to finance it during poor economic times, and editing the club journal '' The Posthorn''. The American Philatelic Society Hall of Fame award honors deceased philatelists who have contributed significantly to the field of national and/or international philately. History The APS ''Hall of Fame'' award was founded at the 1940 American Philatelic Society Convention.
