Pope County is a County (United States), county in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population was 63,381. The county seat is Russellville, Arkansas, Russellville. The county was formed on November 2, 1829, from a portion of Crawford County, Arkansas, Crawford County and named for John Pope (Kentucky politician), John Pope, the third governor of the Arkansas Territory. Pope County was the nineteenth (of seventy-five) county formed. The county's borders changed eighteen times in the 19th century with the creation of new counties and adjustments between counties. Arkansas counties are divided into townships. Each township includes unincorporated space and some may have one or more incorporated towns or cities. Incorporated municipalities can and often do straddle township (and sometimes even county) lines. Townships in Arkansas have very limited functions. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and location information about more than two million physical and cultural features, encompassing the United States and its territories; the Compact of Free Association, associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau; and Antarctica.
