In Ancient Rome, the Latin term (plural ) designated a village within a rural area () or the neighbourhood of a larger settlement. During the Republican era, the four of the city of Rome were subdivided into . In the 1st century BC, Augustus reorganized the city for administrative purposes into 14 regions, comprising 265 . Each had its own board of officials who oversaw local matters. These administrative divisions are recorded as still in effect at least until the mid-4th century. The word "" was also applied to the smallest administrative unit of a provincial town within the Roman Empire. ''Veni, vidi, vici'' (, ; "I came; I saw; I conquered") is a Latin phrase used to refer to a swift, conclusive victory. The phrase is popularly attributed to Julius Caesar who, according to Appian, used the phrase in a letter to the Roman Senate around 47 BC after he had achieved a quick victory in his short war against Pharnaces II of Pontus at the Battle of Zela (modern-day Zile, Turkey). The phrase is attributed in Plutarch's ''Life of Caesar'' and Suetonius's ''Lives of the Twelve Caesars: Julius''. Plutarch writes that Caesar used it in a report to Amantius, a friend of his in Rome. Suetonius states that Caesar displayed the three words as an inscription during his Pontic triumph. Vici is a town in Dewey County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 611 at the time of the 2020 census. No information appears on the origins of the town name, but Vici is Latin for “I conquered.” History Although it had a couple of nearby predecessor settlements, the current town of Vici was platted on September 11, 1911, at a time when buildings were being moved to the site to be close to the tracks of the newly built Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railway, later part of the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad.
