Vice Chief Of Air Staff (Pakistan)
The Vice Chief of the Air Staff (VCAS) is the principal deputy and second-in-command (S-in-C) of the Pakistan Air Force, reporting under the Chief of Air Staff. The post is usually held by an Air Marshal, a three-star rank air force general, who is responsible for flight safety, intelligence, procurement, public relations, and the Air War College. The current VCAS is Air Marshal Muhammad Zahid Mahmood. He succeeded Air Marshal Syed Noman Ali to the post on 21 March 2022. Air marshal (abbreviated as AM or AIRMSHL) is a commissioned three-star military rank in Pakistan Air Force with a NATO's equivalent rank code of OF-8. It ranks above two-star air vice marshal and below four-star air chief marshal, and while it is the second-highest rank of a military branch in uniformed services distinct from navy and army, it is equivalent to Vice admiral of navy and lieutenant general of army. Promotion to the rank of air marshal requires a solid record of military achievement by an air vice marshal. However, the rank is also used for fighter pilots as a position advancement. Air Vice-Marshal Michael John O'Brian (Urdu: مايكل او براءين; born: 5 January 1928 – 8 June 2002) was an air officer in the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) who served as the Commandant of National Defence University, Islamabad. Tahir Rafique Butt (Urdu:طاهر رفيق بٹ;b. 1955), is a retired air officer who was the 13th Chief of Air Staff of the Pakistan Air Force serving from 19 March 2012 to 19 March 2015.
