This is a list of vice-chancellors of the University of Wales, Trinity Saint David and its previous founding institutions. The institution has changed its title three times in its history, from St David's College to St David's University College in 1971, then to the University of Wales, Lampeter in 1996, and more recently to the University of Wales, Trinity Saint David—a merging of '' University of Wales, Lampeter'' and Trinity University College, Carmarthen—in 2010; the names are split up into these categories. Gilbert Cunningham Joyce
Gilbert Cunningham Joyce (7 April 1866 – 22 July 1942) was a university educator and Bishop of Monmouth. He was educated at Harrow School, and Brasenose College, Oxford. He took his BA in 1888, MA in 1892, BD in 1904, and DD in 1909. After studying briefly in Germany he was ordained deacon in 1892 by Bishop Lewis of Llandaff, and was sub-warden of St Michael's College, Aberdare, from 1892 to 1896, receiving priest's orders in 1893. From 1897 to 1916 he was Warden of St Deiniol's Library, Hawarden, and in 1916, he was made principal of St David's College, now the University of Wales, Lampeter. The college at Lampeter was founded in 1822 as a theological college, but had, by 1916, liberalised its admissions policy and curriculum. Joyce, due to his own background in the clergy, wanted the college to return to its theological roots. University Of Wales Trinity Saint David
The University of Wales Trinity Saint David ( cy, Prifysgol Cymru Y Drindod Dewi Sant) is a multi-campus university with three main campuses in South West Wales, in Carmarthen, Lampeter and Swansea, a fourth campus in London, England, and learning centres in Cardiff, Wales, and Birmingham, England. The university came into existence through the merger of the two oldest higher education institutions in Wales, the University of Wales, Lampeter (UWL) and Trinity University College (TUC) in 2010, under Lampeter's royal charter of 1828. In 2011, it was announced that the University of Wales would also be merged into Trinity Saint David. On 1 August 2013 the university merged with Swansea Metropolitan University. Medwin Hughes DL DPhil DPS FRSA FLSW is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and of the University of Wales. He was previously principal of Trinity University College, Carmarthen and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wales, Lampeter. Alfred Cosier Morris (born 12 November 1941) is a British academic. He was the first vice-chancellor of the University of the West of England in Bristol from 1992 to 2005 and before that was director of its predecessor, Bristol Polytechnic, from 1986. Education Educated at Hymers College, Morris went on to study financial control at the University of Lancaster. Career In September 2008, Morris was appointed interim vice-chancellor of the University of Wales, Lampeter in order to ensure the creation of a new institution incorporating Trinity University College and University of Wales, Lampeter. He was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wales, Lampeter between 2003 and 2008. Keith Robbins
Keith Gilbert Robbins (9 April 1940 – 12 September 2019) was a British historian and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wales, Lampeter. Professor Robbins was educated at Bristol Grammar School, and Magdalen and St Antony's College, Oxford. His academic career began in 1963 as Assistant Lecturer in History at the University of York where he subsequently became Lecturer. He moved to the University College of North Wales, Bangor, in 1971, as Professor of History and was later appointed Dean of the Faculty of Arts. In 1980 he moved to the University of Glasgow as Professor of Modern History. His final academic post was as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wales, Lampeter, between 1992 until 2003, when he was succeeded by Professor Robert A Pearce. Brian Robert Morris
Brian Robert Morris, Baron Morris of Castle Morris, (4 December 1930 – 30 April 2001), was a British poet, critic and professor of literature. He became the Labour Party's deputy chief whip and education spokesman in the House of Lords. Born and educated in Cardiff, Morris went on, after national service with the Welsh Regiment, to read English at Worcester College, Oxford. He stayed on at Oxford as a tutor in Old and Middle English while doing his doctorate on John Cleveland, the Cavalier poet. In 1955, he married Sandra James, and they had two children. His major promotion came in 1971 when he began his decade as professor of English literature at Sheffield University, in succession to William Empson. Brinley Rees
Brinley Roderick Rees (27 December 1919 – 21 October 2004) was a Welsh academic. He wrote extensively on Classics, particularly the study of the Greek language. His early work was devoted to Greek papyri; a later publication was devoted to the life and letters of Pelagius. Life and career Rees was born on 27 December 1919. His father was a winder in the Mynydd (Mountain) colliery in Gorseinon, and Brinley was one of four children including Alwyn D. Rees. Rees was educated at Christ College, Brecon, Wales, and Merton College, Oxford, and after wartime service in the Royal Welch Fusiliers took his first academic position at Cardiff High School for Boys, where he was Assistant Master between 1947 and 1948. Rees then started his long career in higher education. John Roland Lloyd Thomas
John Roland Lloyd Thomas (22 February 1908 – 11 April 1984) was an Anglican priest and the Principal of St David's University College from 1953 to 1975. He was, himself, a graduate of St David's College, gaining a BA from the institution before completing a second BA in Theology at Jesus College, Oxford. He was the first Lampeter graduate to become Principal of St David's. He was ordained in 1933 and was the Curate at St John the Baptist, Cardiff from 1932 until 1940 when he became a Chaplain to the Forces. Henry Kingsley Archdall (2 March 1886 – 27 February 1976) was an Australian academic and clergyman. After teaching at Cambridge University, in Australia and in New Zealand, he became Principal of St David's College, Lampeter and Chancellor of St David's Cathedral, then headmaster of King's College, Auckland. Life and church Archdall was born in Balmain, Sydney, New South Wales, the son of an Anglican clergyman.
