Vic Bennetts
Vic Bennetts (born May 1944) is an Australian professional golfer. Bennetts had an excellent amateur career through the 1960s, becoming the first golfer to win the New South Wales Junior Championship three times. Bennetts turned pro in 1968 and quickly had much success, culminating with his "golden year" of 1971 where he won 12 events. Injuries and poor discipline over the next few years, however, arrested his progress. In the mid-1970s, Bennetts teamed up with fitness trainer Ray Anderson who significantly improved his performance, highlighted by a victory at the 1975 Australian PGA Championship, his biggest win. For the remainder of his career, Bennetts primarily worked as a driving range owner, director of golf at Moore Park Golf Course in Sydney, and club professional. The PGA Tour of Australasia, currently known for sponsorship reasons as the ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia, is a professional golf tour for men, owned and operated by the PGA of Australia. Official events on the tour count for World Golf Ranking points. The tour is recognised as being founded in 1973 when the PGA of Australia instituted an Order of Merit. Despite always including at least one tournament in New Zealand, the tour was known as the PGA Tour of Australia until it adopted its current name in 1991 following the inclusion of three events in Asia. Phil Billings
Phillip K. Billings (born 1939) is a former Australian amateur golfer. Golfing career He was part of the winning Australian team at the 1966 Eisenhower Trophy in Mexico City. As national captain, he led his country to a tie with Great Britain at the Commonwealth Tournament in 1963. He has won the Lake Macquarie Amateur the most times, winning on seven occasions (1959, 1960, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1974). He was the medallist in the 1961 Australian Amateur and won the New South Wales Amateur the same year. Billings also competed in professional events. Tony Mangan (golfer)
Tony Mangan (born 20 April 1957 in Dublin) is an ultra distance runner from Ireland. He completed on 27 October 2014 a distance running around the world for Aware, a charity helping to defeat depression. He is the current world 48-hour indoor track record holder . Also the world 48-hour treadmill record 405.22 km. Mangan states, "I didn't start running till I was almost 30. Then I dreamed of running around the World. I got delayed for over 20 years for many reasons, breaking a few world ultra records. Now I am retired from competition I can finally live my dream." David Graham (golfer)
Anthony David Graham, AM (born 23 May 1946) is a former professional golfer from Australia. He won eight times on the PGA Tour, including two major championships. Early life Graham is from Tasmania, Australia. He is a natural left-hander but "converted" into a right-hander. Professional career At the age of 14, Graham began his first job as an assistant professional at Riversdale Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia. Brisbane Water Tournament
The Brisbane Water Tournament was a golf tournament played in Brisbane Water area on the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia in the 1968 and 1969. The event was organised by the Brisbane Water District Golf Association and was unusual, in that a different course was used on each day. Prize money was A$4,000 in both years. The first event was played from 11 to 14 January 1968. It was planned to play at Everglades Country Club, Tuggerah Lakes Golf Club, Gosford Golf Club and Wyong Golf Club on successive days. 60 golfers competed. Col Johnston and Graeme Bell led after the first day with two-under-par rounds of 65. Bob Shaw led after two rounds with rounds of 67 and 72, three over par. The third round at Gosford was abandoned because of heavy rain and the final round was switched to Tuggerah Lakes with 27 holes planned for the final day. Bob Stanton (golfer)
Robert James Stanton (born 20 January 1946) is a retired professional golfer from Australia. He had considerable success in the late 1960s, winning a number of tournaments in Australia and playing on the PGA Tour. As a 20-year-old, he won the 1966 Dunlop International, beating Arnold Palmer in a sudden-death playoff. He never won on the PGA Tour but was runner-up twice, in the 1969 AVCO Golf Classic and the 1970 Florida Citrus Invitational. North Coast Open
The North Coast Open was a professional golf tournament in Australia from 1951 to 1975. It was always held at Coffs Harbour Golf Club in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales. It was a PGA Tour of Australia event from 1973 to 1975. The name "North Coast Open" was not used until the 1953 championship, the first two events being referred to as Coffs Harbour Golf Club £200 Professional Purse. Initially the event was played over 36 holes, increasing to 54 holes in 1959, and 72 holes in 1962. The 1974 event was the largest with 188 players; 119 professionals and 69 amateurs. It also had its highest hitherto purse at $A8,000. Winners The 1970 event was reduced to 54 holes by bad weather. New South Wales PGA Championship
The New South Wales PGA Championship was a professional golf tournament played in New South Wales, Australia between 1923 and 2015. History The inaugural event was held in 1923 and was won by Fred Popplewell with a score of 311. Dan Soutar had led by two strokes after the first 36 holes at The Australian Golf Club but Popplewell took a three shot lead after a third round of 74 and held on in the final round to win by a stroke. The final 36 holes were played at Royal Sydney. It was a stroke-play event again in 1924 but thereafter it was generally match-play until World War II. After the war it was a match play event in 1946 and 1950 but otherwise it was a stroke-play tournament. 1968 Eisenhower Trophy
The 1968 Eisenhower Trophy took place 9 to 12 October at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Black Rock, Victoria, Australia. It was the sixth World Amateur Team Championship for the Eisenhower Trophy. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 26 four-man teams. The best three scores for each round counted towards the team total. The United States won the Eisenhower Trophy for the third time, finishing a strokes ahead of the silver medalists, Great Britain and Ireland. Canada took the bronze medal while Australia finished fourth. Michael Bonallack and Vinny Giles had the lowest individual scores, six-under-par 286. Great Britain and Ireland led by 7 strokes after three rounds but the Americans scored 73, 73 and 75 in the final round to Great Britain and Irelands 76, 76, and 77 to win by a stroke. Tony Gresham
Anthony Yale Gresham (born 4 December 1940) is an Australian amateur golfer. He won the 1977 Australian Amateur and represented Australia in seven successive Eisenhower Trophy events between 1968 and 1980. He also won two professional events, the 1975 New South Wales Open (golf), New South Wales Open and the 1978 South Australian Open (golf), South Australian Open. Golf career Gresham reached four finals of the Australian Amateur, although he only won once, beating Chris Bonython at the 40th hole in 1977. He lost to Ray Jenner in 1973, Peter Sweeney (golfer), Peter Sweeney in 1976 and Mike Clayton (golfer), Mike Clayton in 1978. He was also a medalist four times, in 1967, 1975, 1977 and 1981.
