Émile Louis Vernier
Émile Louis Vernier (29 November 1829 – 24 May 1887) was a French painter and lithographer. He was known for his marine scenes. Life Émile Louis Vernier was born on 29 November 1829 in Lons-le-Saunier, Jura. The family moved to Besançon where his father owned the Café Granvelle. He was enrolled in the Royal College of Besançon, for a military career, but was allowed to move to the Besançon school of drawing, and then to enter the studio of Collette, a well-known lithographer. He submitted his work to the Paris Salon for the first time in 1857, with several lithographs after Maurice Sand. Vernier married Maria Vauthier on 27 June 1861. In 1867 he exhibited two paintings of the country around Besançon and several lithographs after Jean-Jacques Henner, Jean-Joseph-François Tassaert and Gustave Courbet. Marie Vernier
Marie Vernier or ''Venier'' (fl. 1590 – fl.1627), was a French stage actress, known also as Mlle La Porte. She is commonly thought to be the first French actress to be known by name. Life Vernier was from Sens, where her father was ''procureur au bailliage''. A 1602 contract indicates Marie's marriage to Mathieu Lefebvre, a native of La Roche-Bernard in Brittany. Lefebvre, who was born in 1574, performed under the stage-name of La Porte in Paris between 1594 and 1609. At this time, Vernier was a ''fille majure'', meaning that she was over the age of 25 and of free from guardianship. Two other legal documents offer some insight into the lives of the Vernier and La Porte. In December 1622, Marie Venière petitioned for and was granted separation of property from her husband. Pierre Vernier (19 August 1580 at Ornans, Franche-Comté (at that time ruled by the Spanish Habsburgs, now part of France) – 14 September 1637, same location) was a French mathematician and instrument-inventor. He was the inventor and eponym of the vernier scale used in measuring devices. Life He was born in Ornans, France, in 1580. He was taught science by his father. He became captain and castellan of the castle at Ornans, for the King of Spain. He was also later councillor and director general of economy in the County of Burgundy. In Brussels, in the year 1631, Vernier published his treatise ''La construction, l'usage, et les propriétés du quadrant nouveau de mathématique'', and dedicated it to the Infanta. In it, he described the ingenious device which now bears his name, the vernier scale.
