Vera Selby
Vera Selby MBE (born 13 March 1930) is an English former snooker and English billiards player. She won the Women's World Open Championship twice, in both 1976 and 1981. She was also the Women's Billiards champion from 1970 to 1978. Career Selby was introduced to billiards as a six-year-old. Her uncle had a table in the cellar of his home in Newcastle and she would sit and watch. At the age of 36, she was seen playing by former British amateur billiards and snooker champion Alf Nolan, who started coaching her. In 1976 she became the first ever women's world champion, claiming the title by beating Muriel Hazeldine 4–0 in the final, which was held in Middlesbrough.History Women's World Snooker. Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. Maureen Baynton
Maureen Baynton (born Maureen Barrett in 1937) is an English former snooker and billiards player. She held the record for winning most Women's Amateur Snooker Championships after winning eight times between 1954 and 1968, and also won seven Women's Amateur Billiards championships between 1955 and 1980. She was runner-up in the 1983 World Women's Snooker Championship. Biography Baynton began to play snooker and billiards at Peckham Health Centre, teaching herself, from the age of 11. Three years after taking up the games, she was the girls champion at both snooker and billiards. After a highly successful playing career in which she won a record eight Women's Amateur Snooker Championships between 1954 and 1968, and seven Women's Amateur Billiards championships between 1955 and 1980, she retired from competition for several years. Thea Hindmarch
Dorothea Hindmarch (4 June 1918 – 20 September 2001), also known as Thea March, was an English champion player of billiards, and snooker player. She won the equivalent of the women's world billiards title three times, in 1962, 1967 and 1969. Biography Hindmarch was born on 4 June 1918. During World War II, Hindmarch was a corporal in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, leading a small team involved in radar location in South Wales. Hindmarch won the London and Home Counties division of the Ladies' snooker championship in 1959, and for six years consecutively from 1965 to 1970. She also won the Southern Counties championship for four consecutive years from 1966. In English Billiards, Hindmarch was five times London and Home Counties champion, including from 1967 to 1969. 1981 Women's World Open (snooker)
The 1981 Women's World Open was a women's snooker tournament that took place in May 1981 at Thorness Bay, organised by the Women's Billiards Association and sponsored by Guinness. It is recognised as the 1981 edition of the World Women's Snooker Championship first held in 1976. Vera Selby defeated Mandy Fisher 3–0 in the final to win the title, receiving £2,000 prize money as champion. Defending champion Lesley McIlrath was beaten 2–3 in the quarter-finals by Sue Foster. Selby, the 1976 champion did not lose a during the tournament. In reaching the final she beat Mandy Walton 2–0, then recorded 3–0 wins over Grace Cayley, Maryann McConnell and Foster. Fisher had wins over Ann Johnson and Fran Lovis on her route to the final and received £1,000 as runner-up.
