Ventspils Gymnasium No.1
Ventspils State Gymnasium No.1 ( lv, Ventspils Valsts 1. ģimnāzija) is a secondary school located in Ventspils, Latvia. History Ventspils Gymnasium No.1 was founded in December 9, 1918, thus being the first secondary school founded in independent Latvia. Over the years its name has been changed many times mostly because of the regime change in the country, for example, when Latvia was a part of the USSR it was named after Janis Fabricius, a military commander of the Red Army. In 1996 it received status of Gymnasium, meaning that it provides advanced secondary education. Renovation Since 2004 the school's building has been experiencing a lot of improvements. The Government of Latvia and Ventspils City Council invested more than one million euro to build a new sports hall, proving a new place for students to do sports. Ģirts Valdis Kristovskis (born 19 February 1962, in Ventspils) is a Latvian politician. He is a member of the centre-right Unity party. Kristovskis served in several previous Latvian governments as the Minister for the Interior from 3 August 1993 to 28 October 1994, when he resigned), and the Minister of the Defense from 26 November 1998 to 9 March 2004. Jānis Strēlnieks
Jānis Strēlnieks (born 1 September 1989) is a Latvian professional basketball player for AEK Athens of the Greek Basket League and the Basketball Champions League. He also represents the senior Latvia national team. Standing at tall, he mainly plays at the shooting guard position. Professional career Strēlnieks started his professional career in 2007, with Latvian team Ventspils, where he played for four years. In 2010, he was pursued by the EuroLeague club Union Olimpija, which was then head coached by Jure Zdovc. However, Ventspils didn't let him go to Slovenia. Lauma Grīva
Lauma Grīva (born 27 October 1984) was a Latvian athlete who competed in the long jump. At the 2010 European Championships she achieved a new personal best of 6.60 metres, but was two centimetres short of qualifying for the final. She finished 15th. Lauma is also the 2009 Latvian champion in long jump. Her sister Māra Grīva Māra Grīva (born 4 August 1989 in Ventspils) is a Latvian track and field athlete competing in the long and triple jump. Gatis Gūts
Gatis Gūts (born 15 April 1976, Ventspils) is a former Latvian bobsleigh pilot who had competed since 1994. Currently he is one of the coaches of Latvian bobsleigh team. His two last seasons have seen him twice in the top ten in the World Cup, both times with co-pilot Intars Dīcmanis. He also competed at the 10 World Championships.Best result in World Championships in Lake Placid 2003 where he and Intars Dīcmanis finished 5th in two man sled. Best World Cup in 4man was fourth.
