Khoja
The Khojas ( sd}; gu, ખોજા, hi, ख़ोजा) are a mainly Nizari Isma'ili Shia community of people originating in Gujarat, India. Derived from the Persian Khwaja, a term of honor, the word Khoja is used to refer to Lohana Rajputs or Baniya castes who converted to Islam from Hinduism. They are historically members of the Bania groups converted to Islam by Muslim pirs (saints). In India, most Khojas live in the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and the city of Hyderabad. Many Khojas have also migrated and settled over the centuries in East Africa, the Caribbean, Europe and North America. The Khoja were by then adherents of Nizari Isma'ilism. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in the aftermath of the Aga Khan Case a significant minority separated and adopted Sunni Islam and Twelver shi'ism, while the majority remained Nizari Isma'ili. Ali Velshi (born October 29, 1968 or 1969) is a Canadian television journalist, a senior economic and business correspondent for NBC News since October 2016. He was also substitute anchor for '' Top Story with Tom Llamas'' on NBC News Now at weeknights and ''The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell'' on MSNBC at Friday night. Murad Velshi (born April 4, 1935) is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1987 to 1990. He represented the riding of Don Mills in Toronto. Background Velshi was born and raised in Pretoria, South Africa. He was a master baker and entrepreneur before relocating to Kenya where he operated a real-estate company. Rumina Velshi (born c.1955) is the Canadian President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). She chairs a committee for International Gender Champions. Life Velshi was born in Uganda and she had parents who had Indian heritage. In 1972, Idi Amin who was the President of Uganda decided to eject Ugandan Asians from the country. She and her parents had to leave and they went to Canada. She arrived early in the year and later that year she had to decide on a university course. Velshi has noted that when was evicted from Uganda she had one significant possession and that was her education.
