Velarde, New Mexico
Velarde is a census-designated place (CDP) in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 502 at the time of the 2010 census. Velarde is located on New Mexico State Road 68, in the Rio Grande Rift, at the point where the road enters the Rio Grande Gorge. In 1750, Juan Matias Velarde settled Velarde, (2012 New Mexico Blue Book) at the time named La Joya after his Spanish-born ancestor, Juan Antonio Pérez Velarde, who settled near El Paso del Río del Norte (present Ciudad Juárez, Mexico) in 1725. His move to this Rio Grande settlement encouraged other members of his family to move north into colonial New Mexico in the mid-18th century.Robert Hixson. Mario Velarde Velázquez (29 March 1940 – 19 August 1997) was a Mexican football midfielder, who played for the Selección de fútbol de México (Mexico national team) between 1962 and 1972. Randy Lee Velarde (born November 24, 1962) is an American former baseball infielder and utility player who played 16 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). He played the majority of his career for the New York Yankees, and also played for the California/Anaheim Angels, Oakland Athletics and Texas Rangers from 1987 to 2002. Pedro Velarde y Santillán (25 October 1779 – 2 May 1808) was a Spanish artillery captain famous for his heroic death in the '' Dos de Mayo'' uprisings against the French occupation of Madrid. He became a popular hero and martyr figure for Spain's subsequent War of Independence from the French Empire. Born to a Cantabrian family in Muriedas, Camargo, Velarde enrolled in the Artillery College (''Colegio de Artillería'') at the Alcázar de Segovia in 1793. Pablita Velarde (September 19, 1918 – January 12, 2006) born Tse Tsan (Tewa: "Golden Dawn") was an American Pueblo artist and painter. Early life and education Velarde was born on Santa Clara Pueblo near Española, New Mexico on September 19, 1918. After the death of her mother, when Velarde was about five years old, she and two of her sisters were sent to St Catherine's Indian School in Santa Fe. At the age of fourteen, she was accepted to Dorothy Dunn's Santa Fe Studio School at the Santa Fe Indian School and was one of the first women students. There, she became an accomplished painter in the Dunn style, known as "flatstyle" painting.
