Veinticinco De Mayo-class Cruiser
The two ''Veinticinco de Mayo''-class heavy cruisers served in the Argentine Navy through World War II. They were the only post-Washington Naval Treaty heavy cruisers built for a South American navy. Both ships of the class were built in Italy by the OTO company, and commissioned into the Argentine Navy in 1931. Background Prior to the First World War, Argentina engaged in a vastly expensive naval arms race with its neighbors and rivals Brazil and Chile. As all three countries were forced to acquire their warships from abroad, the war effectively halted the race. After the conflict's end, the Argentine Navy pushed their government to fund a new naval construction program and put their fleet on the same power level as Brazil's and Chile's. ARA ''Veinticinco de Mayo'' was a cruiser which served in the Argentine Navy. The English translation of the name is ''May 25'', which is the date of Argentina's May Revolution in 1810. History and design ''Veinticinco de Mayo'' was built in Italy and was the first ship of the of cruisers. Three vessels were to be produced, but in the end, only ''25 de Mayo'' and her sister ship were acquired, both in 1931. These ships were unusual in several ways. First, they carried 7.5-inch guns, only the third class of warship to do so (the British ''Hawkins''-class cruisers of World War I being another; a more typical main armament for heavy cruisers is 8-inch guns). ''Almirante Brown'' was a heavy cruiser in service with the Argentine Navy. The ship was named in honour of Admiral Guillermo Brown, the Father of the Argentine Navy. Design and construction ''Almirante Brown'' was built by Odero in Genoa (Italy), laid down 27 November 1927, launched on 11 August 1929, and completed 11 July 1931. Her total displacement was 6,800 tons. The ship was broadly similar to the Italian but was armed with three twin gun turrets as against four twin guns.
