Vaxholm Coast Artillery Regiment
The Vaxholm Coastal Artillery Regiment ( sv, Vaxholms kustartilleriregemente), designation KA 1, was a Swedish Navy coastal artillery regiment of the Swedish Armed Forces which operated between 1902 and 2000. The unit was based at Rindö in the Stockholm archipelago in Uppland. History On 1 January 1902, the Swedish Coastal Artillery was established as a separate military branch in the Swedish Armed Forces, following a decision taken in May the previous year. The decision meant that Karlskrona Artillery Corps and Vaxholm Artillery Corps was disbanded and that a coastal artillery was established. The Vaxholm Artillery Corps was transferred to the coastal artillery and formed the Vaxholm Coastal Artillery Regiment (KA 1). The regiment manned the Vaxholm Fortress and Oskar-Fredriksborg Fortress as well as Fårösund's coastal position and Hörningsholm's coastal position. Swedish Coastal Artillery
The Swedish Coastal Artillery ( sv, Kustartilleriet, KA) has its origin in the Archipelago Artillery that was raised in 1866. The Coastal Artillery was formed from the Archipelago Artillery, the Marine Regiment and parts of the Artillery in 1902. Kustartilleriet, abbreviated KA, was an independent branch within the Swedish Navy until July 1, 2000, when the Swedish Coastal Artillery was disbanded and reorganised as the Swedish Amphibious Corps. The changed name and new structure were to reflect the new tasks that the old Coastal Artillery had moved to after the end of the Cold War and the demise of the Warsaw Pact. Roslagen Marine Regiment
Roslagen Marine Regiment ( sv, Roslagens marinregemente, designation RMR, was a Swedish Navy coastal artillery unit which operated between from 1956 to 2000. The unit was based at Hamnholmen in Norrtälje Municipality. History Roslagen Marine Regiment was raised in 1956 as the 1st Coastal Artillery Brigade (''Första kustartilleribrigaden'', KAB 1). The brigade was then in the peace organization under the Vaxholm Coastal Artillery Regiment (KA 1), but was an independent unit in the war organization. The brigade consisted initially in the war organization of a staff at Hamnholmen and two barrier battalions (''spärrbataljoner'') based in Arholma and Söderarm as well as local defence battalions. In 1984, the brigade's war organization consisted of three barrier battalions, Roten, Arholma and Söderarm, and local defense battalions. The 202nd Coastal Ranger Company ( sv, 202. kustjägarkompaniet, or , KJ) is an amphibious special operations capable ranger unit within the Swedish Amphibious Corps, which is the maritime land force arm of the Swedish Navy. History The embryo for the formation of the coastal rangers began with a discussion at the Coastal Artillery Club () on 4 December 1950. The introductory speech about commandos was made by Captain Bertil Stjernfelt. During the evening, three Swedish officers with war experience told the demands that should be placed on Swedish commandos. These three men were Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Murray who commanded the 2nd Ranger Company of the Swedish Volunteer Corps at Hanko in Finland in 1941, Gösta Benckert with war experience from both Finland and Norway, and the paratrooper Erik G:son Lewenhaupt, with experience of fighting in Normandy, among other places. The Defence Act of 2000 (prop. 1999/2000:30) was a defence act passed by the Swedish Riksdag on 30 March 2000, and the largest reorganisation of the Swedish Armed Forces since the Defence Act of 1925. The act was a continuation of the policies set in motion by the Defence Act of 1996: shifting the military's focus from the defence of Swedish territory to a more flexible "operational defence* (Swedish: ''insatsförsvar'') for smaller-scale peacekeeping operations in foreign nations. Swedish Amphibious Corps
The Amphibious Corps ( sv, Amfibiekåren, Amf) is the maritime land force arm of the Swedish Navy, with an emphasis on coastal defence. Until 2000 it was known as the Coastal Artillery ( sv, Kustartilleriet), but the name was changed to reflect its different role in a post- Cold War world, where its amphibious special operations arm, Kustjägarna, has grown in significance while its coastal batteries have been decommissioned. Organization The 1st Marine Regiment (Amf 1) is the main combat unit of the Amphibious Corps. With its anti-ship missiles, controllable mines and coastal rangers, as well as marine infantry units, it can exercise control in littoral areas. Vaxholm Grenadier Regiment
Vaxholm Grenadier Regiment ( sv, Vaxholms grenadjärregemente), also I 26, was a Swedish Army infantry regiment that was active in various forms 1902–1927. The unit was based on Rindö in Vaxholm. History The Vaxholm Grenadier Regiment was formed in 1902 when the Värmland Rifle Corps (''Värmlands fältjägarkår'', No 26) and Halland Battalion (No 28) were amalgamated as proscribed in the Defence Act of 1901. The regiment would act as infantry in the Vaxholm Fortress and initially had two battalions, but was increased in the Defence Act of 1914 to three battalions. The regiment’s conscripts mainly came from the Stockholm area. As a consequence of the Defence Act of 1925, the regiment was disbanded on 31 December 1927. Vaxholm
Vaxholm is a locality and the seat of Vaxholm Municipality, Stockholm County, Sweden. It is located on the island of in the Stockholm archipelago. The name Vaxholm comes from Vaxholm Castle, which was constructed in 1549 on an islet with this name on the inlet to Stockholm, for defence purposes, by King Gustav Vasa. For historical reasons it has always been referred to as a ''city'', despite the small number of inhabitants, which as of 2010 total was 4,857. Vaxholm Municipality prefers to use the designation ''Vaxholms stad'' (City of Vaxholm) for its whole territory, including 64 islets in the Stockholm archipelago, a usage which is somewhat confusing. Erik Josephson
Erik Semmy Josephson (7 March 1864 - 17 November 1929) was a Swedish architect. Biography Josephson was born in Stockholm, Sweden. He was the son of wholesaler August Abraham Josephson (1822-67) and Augusta Hortensia Jacobsson (1836-1915). Josephson was of Jewish descent. He graduated from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm in 1885 and from the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in 1888. After his studies, he worked at the Swedish National Property Agency (''Overintendentsämbetet''). Through his state owned work employer he got the opportunity to draw, create and be the architect of about 40 barracks facilities for the armed forces around Sweden between 1891 and 1922. He also worked with his own architect firm on the side. During late 1890s and early 1900s, he became known as an industry architect and specialist in bank buildings. Fårösund Fortress
Fårösund Fortress ( sv, Fårösunds fästning) is a decommissioned fortification in Fårösund on Gotland, Sweden, which was built from 1885 to 1886. History Sweden's capacity to protect its neutrality was questioned after the Crimean War 1854–56. England and France persuaded Sweden to fortify the inlet at Fårö with artillery batteries and naval mines. The fortress was built from 1885 to 1886 and consisted of three fixed batteries; Central Battery (batt. I), Northern Battery (batt. II) and Southern Battery (batt. III). At the turn of the century, the batteries were reconstructed. The batteries I and II were given modern quick-firing 57 mm guns, four per battery. Vaxholm Fortress
Vaxholm Fortress ( sv, Vaxholms fästning) is a historic fortification on the island of Vaxholmen in the Stockholm archipelago just east of the Swedish town of Vaxholm. The fortress is accessed by the Kastellet ferry, an electrically powered cable ferry across the channel from Vaxholm town. In 1970, it was used as a movie location for the pirate stronghold in '' Pippi in the South Seas''. A scenic view of the castle may be seen from the car ferry which plies the short distance between Vaxholm and the island Rindö. History The fortress was originally constructed by Gustav Vasa in 1548 to defend Stockholm against shipborne attacks from the east. This wooden blockhouse was replaced by a stone tower during Johan III's reign. Most of the current structure dates from 1833–1863.
