Vaulx-en-Velin
Vaulx-en-Velin () is a commune in the Metropolis of Lyon in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in eastern France. It is the third-largest suburb of the city of Lyon, and is located to its northeast, on the river Rhône. History The rivers, including the Rhône, regularly overflowed their banks, leaving behind a swampy area. The first verifiable mention of the village of Vaulx-en-Velin comes from the year 1225. The place was not spared from wars either. In 1628 the plague raged in the village. Many people suffered from malaria - the field name "En Palud" testifies to this. A dike was built between 1863 and 1879 to dry out around 9,000 hectares of land. The Saint Jean Villeurbanne dam, built between 1879 and 1882, protects Vaulx-en-Velin from flooding. In September 1979 the first Banlieue suburban youth riots in France broke out in the Cité Olivier-de-Serres in Vaulx-en-Velin. One third of the population lives below the poverty line. Vaulx-Vraucourt is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Geography Vaulx-Vraucourt lies southeast of Arras and about northeast of Bapaume, at the junction of the D20, D10E and D36 roads. History The commune name comes from the two hamlets that were combined into one commune in 1821. The village was the site of heavy fighting during World War I. Major battles occurred in this area in 1917 and 1918. Four military cemeteries are located in and around the village, containing the graves of soldiers from the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Chimay
Chimay (, wa, Chimai) is a city and Municipalities of Belgium, municipality of Wallonia located in the Hainaut Province, province of Hainaut, Belgium. In 2006, Chimay had a population of 9,774. The area is 197.10 km2 which gives a population density of 50 inhabitants per km2. It is the source of the Oise (river), Oise River.
