Vassilis Goumas
Vassilis Goumas (alternate spellings: Vasilis, Vasillos, Gkoumas) (Greek: Βασίλης Γκούμας; born 15 November 1946) is a retired Greek professional basketball player. During his playing career, he was nicknamed "The Emperor". Early career Goumas began playing basketball in Greece, with the youth clubs of Olympiacos Volos. He later spent a year in South Africa, followed by two years in Ethiopia, where he played basketball with Olympiacos EAS Addis Ababa. Professional career Goumas began his pro career in 1966, with the Greek team Panellinios, where he was the long-time star of the club. He was the first player to ever reach 10,000 career points scored in the top-tier level Greek Basketball Championship. He is also the unofficial second all-time top scorer in the history of the Greek League (including games before the league split into two divisions, since the 1963–64 season), with 11,030 career points scored. Volos
Volos ( el, Βόλος ) is a coastal port city in Thessaly situated midway on the Greek mainland, about north of Athens and south of Thessaloniki. It is the sixth most populous city of Greece, and the capital of the Magnesia regional unit of the Thessaly Region. German National Basketball Team
The Germany men's national basketball team (german: Deutsche Basketballnationalmannschaft or ''Die Mannschaft'') represents Germany in international basketball competition. The team is directed by the German Basketball Federation (''Deutscher Basketball Bund''), the governing body for basketball in Germany. Currently, Germany is ranked 8th in the FIBA World Rankings. Between 1949 and 1990, separate German national teams were recognised by FIBA due to Allied occupation. The (DBB) were representing the Federal Republic of Germany (named West Germany from 1949 to 1990), while the East Germany team represented the German Demorcratic Republic (1952–1990). The two would later merge, after reunification in 1990. Cap (sports)
In sport, a cap is a player's appearance in a game at international level. The term dates from the practice in the United Kingdom of awarding a cap to every player in an international match of rugby football and association football. In the early days of football, the concept of each team wearing a set of matching shirts had not been universally adopted, so each side would distinguish itself from the other by wearing a specific sort of cap. An early illustration of the first international football match between Scotland and England in 1872 shows the Scottish players wearing cowls, and the English wearing a variety of school caps. The practice was first approved on 10 May 1886 for association football after a proposal made by N. Greek National Basketball Team
The Greece men's national basketball team ( el, Eθνική Oμάδα Καλαθοσφαίρισης Ελλάδος) represents Greece in international basketball. They are controlled by the Hellenic Basketball Federation, the governing body for basketball in Greece. Greece is currently ranked ninth in the FIBA World Rankings. Greece appeared eight times at the FIBA World Cup, their best performance coming in 2006 as runners-up, after beating the United States 101–95 in the tournament's semi-final. Greece took part the in the EuroBasket 28 times, winning the tournament twice; while also coming away with one silver ( 1989) as well as two bronze medals (1949, 2009). Some of the team's highlights at the competition were beating the Soviet Union 103–101 in the final in Athens to win their first title in 1987, and defeating Germany by the score of 78–62 in the final in 2005.
