Vasse, Western Australia
Vasse is a suburb of the city of Busselton in the South West region of Western Australia, west of Busselton and southwest of Perth. Its local government area is the City of Busselton. At the 2016 census, Vasse had a population of 2,479. The area was originally inhabited by the Wardandi people. Hurford and Penney seem to have had a bay whaling operation in Geographe Bay in 1846. The town is named after the Vasse River and Vasse Estuary, both of which in turn are named after French seaman, Thomas Vasse, who disappeared in the area in June 1801 during Nicolas Baudin's expedition. . The townsite of Vasse was gazetted in 1927; the area had previously been known as Newtown. A hall (originally known as Newtown Hall) was built in 1898, while the Old Vasse Primary School was constructed in 1901 and replaced by a newer school on the same site in 1960; the present cite was in use as a school as early as 1884 and there was a public school in the area in 1869. Busselton
Busselton is a city in the South West region of the state of Western Australia approximately south-west of Perth. Busselton has a long history as a popular holiday destination for Western Australians; however, the closure of the Busselton Port in 1972 and the contemporaneous establishment of the nearby Margaret River wine region have seen tourism become the dominant source of investment and development, supplemented by services and retail. Wardandi
The Wadandi, also spelt Wardandi and other variants, are an Aboriginal people of south-western Western Australia, one of fourteen language groups of the Noongar peoples. Name There are at least three theories about the meaning of the tribal ethnonym. One informant suggested it reflected a word for "crow" (''wardan''), a theory that sits poorly with early word lists that state that the Wardandi word for that bird is ''kwa:kum''. A second view argues for the sense of "seacoast people"; one source in support of this cites a word variously given as ''waatu'' or ''waatern'' with the meaning "the ovean ". Cape Naturaliste College
Cape Naturaliste College is a comprehensive public co-educational high day school, located in Vasse, a regional centre in the South West region, south of Perth, Western Australia. Overview The school was established in 2008 and admitted 95 foundation Year 8 students in February of that year. The Minister of Education, Mark McGowan, announced later the same year that the school would become a senior high school and enrol students for Year 11 courses in 2011 and Year 12 in 2012. Enrolments at the school have increased from the initial 95 students in 2008, to 224 in 2009 when Year 9 commenced, to 282 when Year 10 was introduced, and to 355 in 2011 when the school introduced Year 11 classes. Nicolas Thomas Baudin (; 17 February 1754 – 16 September 1803) was a French explorer, cartographer, naturalist and hydrographer, most notable for his explorations in Australia and the southern Pacific. Thomas Vasse
Thomas Timothée Vasse (27 February 1774 in Dieppe, Seine-Maritime – presumed 8 June 1801) was a French sailor who was lost in the surf on the south west coast of Australia in 1801, and presumed drowned. From Vasse's name is taken the name the Vasse, an early name for Busselton, for the land adjacent to where the incident occurred, the town of Vasse, and also a number of geographical features in the area including Vasse River and Vasse Inlet. Born in Dieppe and baptised Timothée Thomas Joseph Ambroise Vasse, Vasse was a helmsman second class on the ''Naturaliste'' during the 1801–04 expedition of the '' Géographe'' and ''Naturaliste'' under Nicolas Baudin, which explored much of the south west coast of New Holland (now Western Australia). The Vasse River is a river in the South West of Western Australia. The headwaters of the river are in the Whicher Range below Chapman Hill and it flows in a northerly direction through the City of Busselton until discharging into the Vasse Estuary and then the Indian Ocean via Wonnerup Inlet and Geographe Bay. 2016 Australian Census
The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as – an increase of 8.8 per cent or people over the . Norfolk Island joined the census for the first time in 2016, adding 1,748 to the population. The ABS annual report revealed that $24 million in additional expenses accrued due to the outage on the census website. Vasse is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in Western Australia. Vasse is based in the South West region of the state, centred on the town of Busselton and is named for the Vasse River. It has been a safe seat for the Liberal Party at all times since its creation, including as its previous incarnation, Sussex. The City of Busselton is a local government area in the South West region of Western Australia, approximately south of Perth, the state capital. The city covers an area of and had a population of 40,640 as at the 2021 Census. It contains two large towns, Busselton and Dunsborough, and a number of smaller towns.
