Vasily Ilyin
Vasily Petrovich Ilyin (russian: Василий Петрович Ильин; 8 January 1949 – 21 September 2015) was a Soviet handball player. Ilyin was born in Lisy Nos settlement, Pargolovsky District, Leningrad Oblast He trained at Burevestnik in Moscow. He was a member of the USSR National Team since 1970 and became the Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR in 1976. In 1972 he was part of the USSR Olympic Team which finished fifth at the 1972 Summer Olympics. He played all six matches and scored eleven goals. Handball at the Summer Olympics refers to two different sports. Field handball was introduced for men at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, but dropped after that. At the 1952 Olympics, field handball was a demonstration sport. (Indoor) handball was introduced for men at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. 1972 Summer Olympics
The 1972 Summer Olympics (), officially known as the Games of the XX Olympiad () and commonly known as Munich 1972 (german: München 1972), was an international multi-sport event held in Munich, West Germany, from 26 August to 11 September 1972. The event was overshadowed by the Munich massacre in the second week, in which eleven Israeli athletes and coaches and a West German police officer at Olympic village were killed by Palestinian Black September members. The motivation for the attack was the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The 1972 Summer Olympics were the second Summer Olympics to be held in Germany, after the 1936 Games in Berlin, which had taken place under the Nazi regime, and the most recent Olympics to be held in the country. Unified Sports Classification System of the USSR (russian: Единая Всесоюзная спортивная классификация) is a document which provided general Soviet physical education system requirements for both athletes and coaches. Similar systems still exist today in several former Soviet republics.
