Vasile Stati
Vasile Stati (born 1939) is a Moldovan politician and historian. Biography He studied history and philology at the Moldovan language Department of the State University of Chişinău. Stati wrote the monographs ''Moldovenii de la est de Nistru'' ("The Moldavians to the east of the Dniester") and ''Istoria Moldovei'' ("History of Moldova"). He has written about the development of the vernacular Moldavian language and the Slavic influences over the Moldavian culture. In the 1980s, he worked at the Institute of Linguistics and Literature of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, and from 1994 to 2001 he was a member of the Moldovan Parliament. Until 2005 he was the secretary of the informational-analytic centre of the Moldovan Parliament. In 2003, he published a Moldovan–Romanian dictionary with a foreword whose purpose was to prove that the Moldovan language is distinct from Romanian. The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova is the supreme representative body of the Republic of Moldova, the only state legislative authority, being a unicameral structure composed of 101 elected MPs on lists, for a period of 4 years. Parliament is elected by universal vote, equal directly, secret and freely expressed. The President of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova is elected by the Parliament, with a minimum of 52 votes. The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova, on a proposal of the Central Electoral Commission, decides to validate or invalidate the mandate of the Member of Parliament. Moldovan (Latin alphabet: ''limba moldovenească''; Moldovan Cyrillic alphabet: лимба молдовеняскэ), also known historically as Moldavian, is one of the two local names of the Romanian language in Moldova. "Moldovan" is declared the official language in Article 13 of the constitution adopted in 1994, while the 1991 Declaration of Independence of Moldova uses the name "Romanian". In 2003, the Moldovan parliament adopted a law defining "Moldovan" and "Romanian" as glottonyms for the same language. In 2013, the Constitutional Court of Moldova interpreted that Article 13 of the constitution is superseded by the Declaration of Independence, thus giving official status to the name "Romanian". Moldovenism
Moldovenism is a political term used to refer to the support and promotion of the Moldovan identity and Moldovan culture primarily by the opponents of such ideas. Some of its supporters ascribe this identity to the medieval Principality of Moldavia. Others, in order to explain the current differences between Romanian-speaking inhabitants of the two banks of the Prut River, ascribe it to the long incorporation of Bessarabia in the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. The opponents, on the contrary, claim that Moldovans and Romanians are a single ethnic group and that the Moldovan identity was artificially created by the USSR.
