Vasanta ( sa, वसन्त, lit=Spring, translit=Vasantā), also referred to as Basant, refers to the Indian spring. One of the main festivals of the Vasanta season is celebrated on '' Vasanta Panchami'' ( sa, वसन्त पञ्चमी), which in Indian society is a cultural and religious festival, celebrated annually on the first day of spring, the fifth day (Panchami) of the Hindu month '' Magha'' (January–February). Origin In Sanskrit ''Vasanta'' means ''spring''. Panchami is the fifth day of ''Shukla Paksha'', the fortnight of the waxing moon in the Hindu month of Magha, (January – February). Vasanta Panchami, which marks the end of the winter and heralds in spring, is dedicated to goddess Saraswati. She is a goddess of water and of a river bearing her name. Vasantha (pronounced vasantā) is a raga in Carnatic music (musical scale of South Indian classical music). It is a ''janya'' raga of '' Suryakantam'', the 17th '' Melakarta'' raga.''Ragas in Carnatic music'' by Dr. S. Vasanta College for Women, also known as Vasanta College, is a women's college in Rajghat, Varanasi (India), admitted to the privileges of the Benaras Hindu University. It was established in 1913 by Dr. Annie Besant. History Vasanta College was founded by Annie Besant in 1913. The college initially was situated in the compound of the Theosophical Society at Kamachha, Bhelupura, Varanasi. In 1954, Jiddu Krishnamurti, foster son of Dr. Annie Besant established the college in Rajghat and in the same year, Vasant Kanya Mahavidyalaya commenced operations in the older facility of Vasanta College. ''Vasant'' () was a Gujarati-language magazine founded and edited by Anandshankar Dhruv, which ran from 1902 to 1939. The magazine played a key role in the development of Gujarati prose writing, and is considered to hold a significant place in the tradition of Gujarati literary magazines. History Anandshankar Dhruv was a close-friend and disciple of Gujarati writer and philosopher Manilal Dwivedi, and published articles in Manilal's magazine '' Sudarshan''. Following Manilal's death in 1898, Dhruv assumed the editorship of ''Sudarshan'' for about four years. In 1902, realizing that he was unable to develop Manilal's line of thinking and mission further, and feeling himself unfit to follow 's sectarian approach, Dhruv gave up the editorship of the magazine to start his own monthly, ''Vasant''. Vasantha Muthuswamy
Vasantha Muthuswamy (12 July 1948 – 21 February 2023) was an Indian physician and bioethicist, head of the Indian Council of Medical Research's Division of Basic Medical Sciences, Traditional Medicine, and Bioethics, and the Division of Reproductive Health and Nutrition, from 1990 to 2008. She was a leader in establishing, revising, and promoting ethical guidelines for medical research in India. She participated in international organizations and projects focused on bioethics, and was a noted critic of ethics dumping. Early life and education Muthuswamy was born in Madras (now Chennai), the daughter of Shri R. Seetharaman and Shrimati Tirupura Sundari. She attended St. Raphael's Girls' Higher Secondary School and Stella Maris College, and earned an MBBS degree at R. G. Kar Medical College in Calcutta (Kolkata).
