Vasabåtarna
Wasaline, previously Oy Vaasa-Umeå Ab (1948–1965), Vaasa-Umeå AB (1965–1979), Oy Vaasanlaivat – Vasabåtarna Ab (1979–1991) and Wasa Line (1991–1993) are different names for the Finnish shipping company that ceased trading in 1993 when it merged into Silja Line. Since 2013 the name is being used by a new company that operates between Vaasa (homebase) and Umeå. History In 1948, ''Rederi Ab Vasa-Umeå'' was founded to start passenger traffic across Kvarken, the narrowest part of the Gulf of Bothnia. On 28 May, the company's first ship MS ''Turisten'' made its first journey from Vaasa in Finland to Umeå in Sweden. MS Arberia
MS ''Arberia'' was a cruiseferry owned by Chryses Finance Co. and operated by Ilion Lines on their Trieste– Durres–Bari service. She was built in 1975 by Dubegion-Normandie, Nantes, France as ''Bore Star'' for Steamship Company Bore, which used her in Silja Line services on the Baltic Sea. During the northern hemisphere winter months she was chartered to Finnlines for cruise services on the African west coast. In 1980 she was sold to Finland Steamship Company and renamed ''Silja Star'' but retained in Silja Line service. MS Wasa King
MS ''Estonia'' was a cruiseferry built in 1980 at the West German shipyard Meyer Werft in Papenburg. In 1993, she was sold to Nordström & Thulin for use on Estline's Tallinn–Stockholm route. The ship's sinking on 28 September 1994, in the Baltic Sea between Sweden, Finland and Estonia, was one of the worst peacetime maritime disasters of the 20th century, claiming 852 lives. The official report concluded that the bow door had separated from the vessel, pulling the ramp ajar. The ship was already listing because of poor cargo distribution, and the list increased rapidly, flooding the decks and the cabins. Shortly, power failed altogether, inhibiting search and rescue, and a full-scale emergency was not declared for 90 minutes. Of the 989 on board, 138 were rescued. MS ''Fennia'' was a car-passenger ferry built in 1966 for Siljavarustamo / Siljarederiet. During her long career ''Fennia'' also sailed for Jakob Lines and Vaasanlaivat / Vasabåtarna, and spent short times chartered to Sessan Linjen, SAGA Linjen, B&I Line, Baltic Line and SeaWind Line. In 2001 the ship was sold to RG Line and renamed ''Casino Express''. In 2007, after being laid up since 2005, the ship was sold to Attar Construction Ltd and renamed ''C. Express''. Concerned about the hazardous materials inside the ship, the Finnish Environment Institute issued a transport ban on the vessel to prevent her from being moved for scrapping in inappropriate conditions. The ban was lifted in July 2009 and the ship, renamed ''Onyx'', left Finland in late 2009. In April 2010 the ship changed hands again and the new owner, Red Line Shipping Ltd, renamed her ''Kaptain Boris'' and sailed her directly to Gadani Beach, Pakistan, where she was beached for scrapping on 8 May 2010. MS ''GNV Azzurra'' is a cruiseferry owned by the Mediterranean Shipping Company and operated by the Italy-based SNAV. It was ordered from Öresundsvarvet in Landskrona, Sweden by Rederi AB Gotland as MS ''Gotland'', but delivered as MS ''Wasa Star'' to Wasa Line, Vaasanlaivat / Vasabåtarna. Between 1984 and 2008 she sailed as MS ''Peter Wessel'' for Larvik Line (until 1996) and Color Line (ferry operator), Color Line, before sold to her current owners. Concept and construction In the late 1970s the Swedish shipbuilding industry was suffering from a downturn, with little to no ships in order from Swedish shipyards. To help the industry the Swedish Prime Minister Ola Ullsten persuaded Rederi AB Gotland to order new ferries from Öresundsvarvet in Landskrona. Although Rederi AB Gotland were reluctant to order new ships at first, in the end they decided to order two large, state-of-the-art ferries, capable of carrying over 2000 passengers. MS ''Rahal'' was a car-passenger ferry owned by Bayway Shipping Co and sailing on the Red Sea. She was built in 1972 by Meyer Werft, Papenburg, Germany as ''Diana'' for Rederi AB Slite and later she was named ''Botnia Express'', ''Alandia'', ''Jamaa II'' and ''Rahal''. Rederi Ab Sally was a Finnish shipping company founded in 1937 by Algot Johansson. Originally a tanker operator, Sally became a dominant member of the Viking Line shipping consortium in the 1970s. The company met bad times in the 1980s and was bought by its rivals Effoa and Johnson Line (owners of Silja Line) in 1987. Silja Line is a Swedish-Finnish cruiseferry brand operated by the Estonian ferry company AS Tallink Grupp, for car, cargo and passenger traffic between Finland and Sweden. The former company Silja Oy—today Tallink Silja Oy—is a subsidiary of the Tallink Grupp, handling marketing and sales for ''Tallink'' and ''Silja Line'' brands in Finland as well as managing Tallink Silja's ship employees.
