Western Armenian
Western Armenian ( Classical spelling: , ) is one of the two standardized forms of Modern Armenian, the other being Eastern Armenian. It is based mainly on the Istanbul Armenian dialect, as opposed to Eastern Armenian, which is mainly based on the Yerevan Armenian dialect. Until the early 20th century, various Western Armenian dialects were also spoken in the Ottoman Empire, especially in the eastern regions historically populated by Armenians known as Western Armenia. The spoken or dialectal varieties of Western Armenian currently in use include Homshetsi, spoken by the Hemshin peoples; the dialects of Armenians of Kessab, Latakia and Jisr al-Shughur of Syria, Anjar of Lebanon, and Istanbul and Vakıflı, of Turkey (part of the "Sueidia" dialect). Sasun and Mush dialect is also spoken in modern-day Armenia villages such as Bazmaberd and Sasnashen. Varoujan Garabedian ( hy, Վարուժան Կարապետեան, also ''Varadjian Garbidjian'' and ''Varuzhan Karapetian''; March 7, 1954 – January 29, 2019) was a Syrian-born Armenian nationalist. Archbishop Varoujan Hergelian (Armenian: Վարուժան Արքեպիսկոպոս Հերկելեան) was the Catholicosal Vicar of the Armenian Prelature of Cyprus from August 1997 until May 2014. Archbishop Varoujan was born on 18 May 1946 in Anjar, Lebanon, as Boghos Hergelian. After graduating from the Seminary School of the Catholicosate of Cilicia in 1967, he served as a teacher & hieromonk, Archimandrite and Bishop in Lebanon, Cyprus and Greece. In Lebanon he served in Zahle and Anjar, in Greece he served in Komotini, Alexandroupoli and Kavala, while in Cyprus he served in Limassol (1970–1974). In August 1997, he was appointed Catholicosal Vicar of the Armenian Prelature of Cyprus as a bishop. In May 2003 he became an archbishop. Daniel Varujan
Daniel Varoujan ( hy, Դանիէլ Վարուժան, 20 April 188426 August 1915) was an Armenian poet of the early 20th century. At the age of 31, when he was reaching international stature, he was deported and murdered by the Young Turk government, as part of the officially planned and executed Armenian genocide. Life and education Varoujan was born Daniel Tchboukkiarian (Դանիէլ Չպուքքեարեան) in the village of Prknig (now called ÇayboyuMaggie Blank, "Pirkinik, Perkinik, Perkenik, Perknig, Perknik, Prknik/ref>) near the town of Sivas in Turkey. After attending the local school, he was sent in 1896, the year of the Hamidian massacres, to Istanbul, where he attended the Mkhitarian school. Varujan Yegan Boghosian (1926 New Britain, Connecticut - September 21, 2020) was an American artist, best known for his sculptures and assemblages. Since 1958 he had held teaching positions at the University of Florida, Cooper Union, Pratt Institute, Yale University, Brown University and Dartmouth College. At Dartmouth, Boghosian was a member of the art faculty from 1968 to 1995. He was awarded an endowed position as the George Frederick Jewett Professor of Art in 1982. Boghosian retired from Dartmouth in 1995 and had since continued his work as a practicing artist up until his death. Varujan Kojian (March 12, 1935; Beirut, LebanonMarch 4, 1993; Santa Barbara, California) was an Armenian-American conductor from Beirut, Lebanon. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and by 1956 joined Los Angeles Philharmonic where he became an assistant concertmaster. He began his job as a conductor in Vienna in mid '60s. From 1973 to 1980 he was the guest conductor at the Royal Opera in Stockholm and during the same years was also working as an associate conductor for the Seattle Symphony. Vosganian was Romania's Minister of Economy and Commerce (2006–2008) in the Tăriceanu cabinet and Minister of Economy in the Ponta cabinet (2012–2013). Varuzhan Akobian ( hy, Վարուժան Հակոբյան, born 19 November 1983 in Yerevan, Soviet Union) is an Armenian-born American chess Grandmaster. Originally from Armenia, he now resides in St. Louis. Varuzhan Sukiasyan ( hy, Վարուժան Սուքիասյան, russian: Варужан Гарсеванович Сукиасян; born 5 August 1956 in Yerevan), is an Armenian association football manager and former player. He is the brother of Yervand Sukiasyan. Between 1978 and 1987, Sukiasyan played at FC Kotayk of Abovyan. He managed the Armenia national team in the 2000–2001 period. In 2015–2016, he worked as manager of the Armenia national team, his second spell.
