Swans (band)
Swans is an American experimental rock band formed in 1982 by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira. One of the few acts to emerge from the New York City-based no wave scene and stay intact into the next decade, Swans have become recognized for an ever-changing sound, exploring genres such as noise rock, post-punk, industrial music, industrial and post-rock. Initially, their music was known for its sonic brutality and misanthropic lyrics. Following the addition of singer, songwriter and keyboardist Jarboe in 1986, Swans began to incorporate melody and intricacy into their music. Jarboe remained the band's only constant member except Gira and semi-constant guitarist Norman Westberg until their dissolution in 1997. In 2010, Gira re-formed the band without Jarboe, establishing a stable lineup of musicians which has toured worldwide and released four albums to critical acclaim. This iteration of the group performed its last shows in November 2017, ending the tour ...

Swans (band) Compilation Albums
Swans are birds of the family Anatidae within the genus ''Cygnus''. The swans' closest relatives include the geese and ducks. Swans are grouped with the closely related geese in the subfamily Anserinae where they form the tribe Cygnini. Sometimes, they are considered a distinct subfamily, Cygninae. There are six living and many extinct species of swan; in addition, there is a species known as the coscoroba swan which is no longer considered one of the true swans. Swans usually mate for life, although "divorce" sometimes occurs, particularly following nesting failure, and if a mate dies, the remaining swan will take up with another. The number of eggs in each clutch ranges from three to eight. Etymology and terminology The English word ''swan'', akin to the German , Dutch and Swedish , is derived from Indo-European root ' ('to sound, to sing'). Young swans are known as '' cygnets'' or as '' swanlings''; the former derives via Old French or (diminutive suffix et 'little') from ...

''The Great Annihilator'' is the ninth studio album by American experimental rock band Swans. It was released on January 23, 1995, through frontman Michael Gira's own record label, Young God. The album has been described by Gira as a companion album to his solo album ''Drainland'' (1995); the two were remastered and re-released together in April 2017. Critical reception ''The Great Annihilator'' received a generally positive reception from critics. AllMusic called the album "an epic, incredible work of art." ''Trouser Press'', on the other hand, wrote that the album "reveals ..that the band is running out of ideas", commenting that is "unlikely to satisfy long-term followers. A more accessible Swans may also be a less cathartic one." Track listing Personnel Credits adapted from ''The Great Annihilator'' liner notes. Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes
"Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes" is a popular old song, the lyrics of which are the poem "To Celia" by the English playwright Ben Jonson, first published in 1616. Lyrics After this song had been popular for almost two centuries, scholars began to discern that its imagery and rhetoric were largely lifted from classical sources - particularly one of the erotic ''Epistles'' of Philostratus the Athenian (c. 170 – 250 AD). This borrowing is discussed by George Burke Johnston in his ''Poems of Ben Jonson'' (1960), who points out that "the poem is not a translation, but a synthesis of scattered passages. Although only one conceit is not borrowed from Philostratus, the piece is a unified poem, and its glory is Jonson's. It has remained alive and popular for over three hundred years, and it is safe to say that no other work by Jonson is so well known." Besides Philostratus, a couple of other classical precedents have also been identified. This literary background helps restore the ...

Love Will Tear Us Apart
"Love Will Tear Us Apart" is a song by English rock band Joy Division, released in June 1980 as a non-album single. Its lyrics were inspired by lead singer Ian Curtis's marital problems and struggles with epilepsy. The single was released the month after his suicide. The song was certified platinum in the UK, selling over 600,000 copies, and has an ongoing legacy as a defining song of the era. In 2002, ''NME'' named "Love Will Tear Us Apart" as the greatest single of all time, while ''Rolling Stone'' named it one of the 500 best songs ever in 2004, 2011, and 2021. Background "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was written about Ian Curtis' troubled relationship with his wife, Deborah Woodruff, whom he married in August 1975. Additionally, it deals with his own struggles with epilepsy, which he was diagnosed with in 1979, and the overwhelming stress of holding down a day job and his growing career as a singer. At a Joy Division gig in October 1979, Curtis met Belgian journalist and music ...

Can't Find My Way Home
"Can't Find My Way Home" is a song written by Steve Winwood that was first released by Blind Faith on their 1969 album ''Blind Faith''. ''Rolling Stone'', in a review of the album, noted that the song featured "Ginger Baker's highly innovative percussion" and judged the lyric "And I'm wasted and I can't find my way home" to be "delightful". Cover versions The song has been covered by many musicians. Brazilian singer and tropicalist composer Gilberto Gil recorded it on his 1971 studio album "Gilberto Gil" (a live version appeared as bonus track on CD as well). American blues guitarist Bonnie Raitt sang the song during her 1972 concert series. A bootleg recording with Raitt, Lowell George, John P. Hammond and Freebo has more than five million views on YouTube. Eric Clapton tapped Yvonne Elliman to sing the song during his 1976–77 concert tours, giving her the stage while he took a break. American glam metal band House of Lords covered the song on their 1990 album '' Sahara'' ...

Drainland
''Drainland'' is the debut solo studio album by American musician Michael Gira. It was released on June 9, 1995, through Alternative Tentacles record label. Using spare arrangements recorded in August 1994 at musician Bill Rieflin's Seattle home, the album features contributions from Rieflin and Gira's Swans bandmate Jarboe. Jarboe released her 1995 solo studio album '' Sacrificial Cake'' as an accompaniment to ''Drainland.'' In April 2017, the record was remastered and re-released together with ''The Great Annihilator'' by Swans, which has since been described as an accompanying record to ''Drainland''. Music and lyrics The album's sound is characterized by its "hypnotically strummed guitars, chiming bells and eerie swirls of synthesizer and sound effects." The tracks "Where Does Your Body Begin?", "Unreal" and "Your Naked Body" are primarily acoustic-based and feature various extra instrumental touches, including keyboards and samples. Lyrically, the album explores Gira's "sel ...

The World Of Skin
The World of Skin was a music project springing out of the American group Swans, which was a collaboration between the core Swans members Michael Gira and Jarboe. The project was initially called Skin, with the first two albums being released under that name, the last one being released under the name the World of Skin. In the UK, the first two albums were released by Product Inc., an imprint of Mute Records, while the last was released on Gira's own Young God label. History Swans' album ''Greed'' began a trend toward greater use of melody, and this trend continued with the later '' Children of God''. The work performed as Skin was initially in marked contrast with the less overtly melodic but contemporaneous Swans work, but later Swans work integrated the two aspects. ''Blood, Women, Roses'' (1987) was the project's first release and featured vocals entirely by Jarboe, who had previously mainly been performing backing vocals. Many of the tracks on this album were covers of show ...
