Blanca Varela
Blanca Leonor Varela Gonzáles (10 August 1926 – 12 March 2009) was a Peruvian poet. Daughter of writer, poet, singer and journalist Serafina Quinteras. Biography Blanca Varela was born in Lima. Her mother was a composer who authored many famous creole waltzes. She studied Humanities and Education at the National University of San Marcos where she met other future writers such as Sebastián Salazar Bondy, Javier Sologuren, Jorge Eduardo Eielson, and her future husband, the artist and sculptor Fernando de Szyszlo with whom she had two children. In 1949 they travelled to Paris where she met Octavio Paz, a key figure in her life, who introduced her to the artists and intellectuals there, such as André Breton, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Henri Michaux, Alberto Giacometti and Fernand Léger, among others; and also other Latin American authors who lived in France at that time, for example Carlos Martínez Rivas. Euclides Varela (born 6 April 1982) is a Cape Verdean long-distance runner. Career Varela first competed for Cape Verde at the 2003 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham where he placed 21st in heats of the 3000 metres in a time of 8:29.10. Seven months later at the 2003 All-Africa Games in Abuja, Nigeria, he finished 13th in the 5000 metres with a time of 14:53.83. In March 2004 at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest, Varela recorded his personal best time in the 3000 metres with an 8:19.17, a then national record. Five months at the 2004 Ibero-American Championships in Athletics in Huelva, Varela finished 9th in the 5000 metres with PB of 14:26.37. Edgar Jose Varela (born August 9, 1980) is an American professional baseball coach. He was the hitting coach for the Minnesota Twins of Major League Baseball (MLB) from 2020 to 2021. Career Varela attended San Gabriel High School in San Gabriel, California. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 38th round of the 1998 MLB draft, but did not sign and attended Los Angeles City College and California State University, Long Beach. He was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 31st round of the 2002 MLB draft. Varela played in the White Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Florida Marlins organizations from 2002 through 2006. Varela joined the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in 2008. Cybèle Varela (born 1943, Petrópolis) is a Brazilian mixed-media artist. She is a painter, video artist, and photographer. Career From 1962 to 1966, Cybèle Varela studied visual arts at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. She began her career as a painter and sculptor, winning the ''Young Contemporary Art Prize'' at the Museum of Contemporary Art, University of São Paulo in 1967 with the triptych: "Of all that could have been, but that wasn’t". José Manuel "Conny" Varela Fernández (born February 13, 1954) is a Puerto Rican politician affiliated with the Popular Democratic Party (PPD).
