Varberg () is a locality and the seat of Varberg Municipality, Halland County, Sweden, with 35,782 inhabitants in 2019. Varberg and all of Halland are well known for their "typical west coast" sandy beaches. In Varberg the coast changes from wide sandy beaches to rocky terrain that continues north into the Bohuslän archipelago and as far as the North Cape. Geography Varberg is located along the Swedish west coast and is a popular beach and surfing destination in both Sweden and Europe. It has a main landmark in the large Fortress and Castle of Varberg, through centuries many wars between Denmark and Sweden was fought here before Southern Sweden, including Varberg became permanently Swedish in 1658 through the Treaty of Roskilde. Varberg Municipality (''Varbergs kommun'') is a municipality in Halland County, in southwest Sweden. Its seat is in Varberg. It was formed in 1971 through the amalgamation of the ''City of Varberg'' and the surrounding rural municipalities. There are 25 original local government entities included in the municipality. 5,000 people are commuting out from the municipality, mainly to Gothenburg and Falkenberg. 3,200 people are commuting into Falkenberg. Varbergs BoIS FC is a Swedish football club located in Varberg, the main town of Varberg Municipality in Halland County. Background The club was formed at a meeting in the Varbergs Folkets Hus on 25 March 1925. The backbone of the new club was a group of men from the Haga district of Varberg who had previously started a football club named Haga Bollklubb. Over the years several sports have been covered by the club but activities are now centred on football and wrestling. The new organisations Varbergs BoIS FC (football) and Varbergs BoIS BK (wrestling) work side by side under the "umbrella" of Varbergs BoIS. Since their foundation Varbergs BoIS FC has participated mainly in the middle divisions of the Swedish football league system. Varbergs GIF FK is a Swedish football club located in Varberg. Background Varbergs Gymnastik- och Idrottsförening was formed on 28 May 1905 and shortly afterwards included football in their programme. In the same year the club became founder members of the Hallands Idrottsförbund (Halland Sports Federation) at the invitation of IF Kamraterna, Halmstad. In the 1940s, the club also played bandy. Varbergs GIF FF were declared bankrupt in December 2007 when their tax liabilities could not be met. As a consequence the club dropped out of Division 4 Halland and reformed in the bottom tier in Division 6 Halland Norra. Varberg Church
Varberg Church (Swedish: ''Varbergs kyrka'') is situated at the marketplace in Varberg, Halland County, Sweden. The church was completed in 1772, as a replacement of an elder church from 1687 that was destroyed in a fire on 18 May 1767. The interior of the church is neoclassical. Mostly of it is from the 19th century. The retable is from 1816. The pulpit was set in during a restoration of the church in 1890–1891. The wooden baptismal font has seven edges. It was made from oak in the 17th century. It comes from an elder church that was destroyed in a fire on 12 August 1666. At this time, the city of Varberg was situated in an area called ''Platsarna''. VLF Transmitter Grimeton
Grimeton Radio Station () in southern Sweden, close to Varberg in Halland, is an early longwave transatlantic wireless telegraphy station built in 1922–1924, that has been preserved as a historical site. From the 1920s through the 1940s it was used to transmit telegram traffic by Morse code to North America and other countries, and during World War II was Sweden's only telecommunication link with the rest of the world. It is the only remaining example of an early pre-electronic radio transmitter technology called an Alexanderson alternator. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004, with the statement: "Grimeton Radio Station, Varberg is an outstanding monument representing the process of development of communication technology in the period following the First World War." Bexell Cottage
The Bexell Cottage (Swedish: ''Bexellska stugan'') is a small cottage in Varberg, Sweden. It has been turned into a historical heritage mini-museum. In Bexell Cottage there are furnitures and painted wall tapestry from the 19th century. The tapestry cover the walls and ceiling of the cottage. Originally, they were only used for Christmas, but today they are posted all the year around.
