Vanuatu
Vanuatu ( or ; ), officially the Republic of Vanuatu (french: link=no, République de Vanuatu; bi, Ripablik blong Vanuatu), is an island country located in the South Pacific Ocean. The archipelago, which is of volcanic origin, is east of northern Australia, northeast of New Caledonia, east of New Guinea, southeast of the Solomon Islands, and west of Fiji. Vanuatu was first inhabited by Melanesian people. The first Europeans to visit the islands were a Spanish expedition led by Portuguese navigator Fernandes de Queirós, who arrived on the largest island, Espíritu Santo, in 1606. Queirós claimed the archipelago for Spain, as part of the colonial Spanish East Indies, and named it . In the 1880s, France and the United Kingdom claimed parts of the archipelago, and in 1906, they agreed on a framework for jointly managing the archipelago as the New Hebrides through an Anglo-French condominium. Riilio "Rio" Rii (born 22 June 1994) is a Ni-Van rower. He was the flagbearer of Vanuatu at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, earning attention for his shirtless, oiled get-up compared to Tongan fighter Pita Taufatofua. Vanuatu National Cricket Team
The Vanuatu national cricket team is the men's team that represents the Republic of Vanuatu in international cricket. The team is organised by the Vanuatu Cricket Association, which became an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1995 and was promoted to associate status in 2009. Vanuatu made its international debut at the 1979 Pacific Games, at which time the country was still known as the New Hebrides. The majority of the team's matches have come against other members of the ICC East Asia-Pacific region, including both at ICC regional tournaments and at the cricket events at the Pacific Games. Vanuatu entered the World Cricket League at the 2008 Division Five tournament. The team participated in the WCL system at the 2015 Division Six event, where it placed third. Mary-Estelle Mahuk
Mary-Estelle Mahuk (née Kapalu born 11 August 1966 in Tanna) is a Vanuatuan athlete. Mahuk competed in three Summer Olympics for her country, at the 1992 Summer Olympics she competed in two events, in the 400 metres she finished 7th in her heat, then in the 400 metres hurdles she again finished 7th in her heat so in neither did she qualify for the next round. Four years later she went to Atlanta for the 1996 Summer Olympics, she entered the 400 metres hurdle and this time finished 6th in her heat but again failed to qualify, then she went to the 2000 Summer Olympics and in the 400 metres hurdles and this time she finished 5th in her heat. Mahuk reached the final and finished 7th in the 400 metres hurdles at the 1998 Commonwealth Games. Sport In Vanuatu
Sports in Vanuatu are played throughout the country. Football (Soccer) Association football is the most popular sport in the country. In 1988, Vanuatu became a member of FIFA and the OFC. Vanuatu has one of the most advanced technical programs in Oceania, particularly at youth level. The Melanesian nation was chosen as one of six countries globally for a FIFA pilot project whereby players are identified at a young age and selected to train and stay full-time at the national academy. As part of that two-year program for players aged 15–17, consideration is given to continuing school or vocational education. The men's national football team has never qualified for the World Cup. They finished fourth in the OFC Nations Cup four times and finished runner up in the South Pacific Games. Basketball Vanuatu's basketball federation has the country's longest international sports federation membership as it joined the International Federation of Basketball (FIBA) in 1966.
