Vanity Fair (British Magazine 1868-1914)
''Vanity Fair'' was a British weekly magazine that was published from 1868 to 1914. Founded by Thomas Gibson Bowles in London, the magazine included articles on fashion, theatre, current events as well as word games and serial fiction. The cream of the period’s "society magazines", it is best known for its witty prose and caricatures of famous people of Victorian and Edwardian society, including artists, athletes, royalty, statesmen, scientists, authors, actors, business people and scholars. Taking its title from Thackeray's popular satire on early 19th-century British society, ''Vanity Fair'' was not immediately successful and struggled with competition from rival publications. Bowles then promised his readers 'Some Pictorial Wares of an entirely novel character', and on 30 January 1869, a full-page caricature of Benjamin Disraeli appeared. JM Flagg
James Montgomery Flagg (June 18, 1877 – May 27, 1960) was an American artist, comics artist and illustrator. He worked in media ranging from fine art painting to cartooning, but is best remembered for his political posters, particularly his 1917 poster of Uncle Sam created for United States Army recruitment during World War I. Life and career Flagg was born on June 18, 1877 in Pelham, New York. He was enthusiastic about drawing from a young age, and had illustrations accepted by national magazines by the age of 12 years. By 14, he was a contributing artist for ''Life'' magazine, and the following year was on the staff of another magazine, ''Judge''. From 1894 through 1898, he attended the Art Students League of New York. Libero Prosperi
Liborio Prosperi ('Lib') Liberio Prosperi (Foligno, 1854 – Foligno, 1928), was an Italian-born artist who belonged to a group of international artists producing caricatures for the British '' Vanity Fair'' magazine. He contributed 55 caricatures between 1885 and 1903, signed 'Lib', and concentrating mainly on the racing set. His 1886 multi-portrait caricature ''The Lobby of the House of Commons'' is on view in the Victorian Gallery of the National Portrait Gallery in London. Julius Mendes Price
Julius Mendes Price (1857 – 29 September 1924) was an artist, war correspondent, explorer, traveller, journalist and caricaturist for ''Vanity Fair'' (signed "Imp", "Jmp" or "jmp"). Several of his newspaper serial reports were later published in book form. Biography Born in St Pancras, London, to a Jewish family, he was educated at University College London and studied art in Brussels and at the École des Beaux Arts, Paris. He was a special war artist and correspondent for the '' Illustrated London News''. For journalist purposes he enlisted as a trooper in Methuen's Horse and served in the Bechuanaland campaign 1884–1885 and continued serving with the regiment until it was disbanded. John Bernard Partridge
Sir John Bernard Partridge (11 October 1861– 9 August 1945) was an English illustrator. Born in London, he was the son of Professor Richard Partridge, F.R.S., president of the Royal College of Surgeons, and nephew of John Partridge, portrait-painter extraordinary to Queen Victoria. For some years he was well known as an actor under the name of Bernard Gould. Education Partridge was educated at Stonyhurst College where one of his fellow pupils was Arthur Conan Doyle. Life and work Partridge then worked for six months in the offices of architect H. Handsom, before joining the firm of Lavers, Barraud and Westlake, ecclesiastical designers, where he spent two years producing altar-pieces, stained-glass etc. He then studied decorative painting under Philip Westlake, 1880–1884. Robert Wallace Hester (1866-1942) was a British artist, engraver, and caricaturist who made witty illustrations of famous people for '' Vanity Fair''. He used the abbreviations and pseudonyms 'W. Jean Baptiste Guth
Jean Baptiste Guth (4 January 1855 – 1922) was a French portrait artist, active from 1875 until a few months before his death. Guth worked mostly in watercolour and pastels. Much of his work was as an illustrator of magazines, especially the French ''L'Illustration'' and the British '' Vanity Fair'', for which he signed his name simply as GUTH. Constantin De Grimm
Constantin de Grimm (December 30, 1845 – April 19, 1896) also known as Baron de Grimm, was a Russian illustrator known internationally for his caricatures in publications such as the '' Vanity Fair'' (UK; under the pseudonym "Nemo"), ''Kladderadatsch'' (Germany), '' The Evening Telegram'' (US), and the German edition of '' Puck'', of which he was founder. He served multiple times as president of the German Press Club. Born at the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg, where his father taught the children of Czar Nicholas I, he relocated to Berlin in 1860, and later to Leipzig, where he contributed drawings to '. GD Giles
Godfrey Douglas Giles (9 November 1857 Karachi - 1 February 1941) was a painter of horses, military scenes and battles, many experienced firsthand while on service with the British Army in India, Afghanistan, Egypt and South Africa. He produced numerous caricatures for the magazine '' Vanity Fair''. Biography Giles was the son of Captain Edward Giles of the Royal Navy who was stationed at Karachi. Godfrey Douglas Giles was a boarding boy at Cheltenham. He was sent to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, to launch his military career, and his first posting was in India in 1875. He saw action in the Second Afghan War with the 1st Sind Horse and the 19th Native Infantry, chiefly on the Khleat and Kandahar fronts, and according to one obituary notice, had been present at Maiwand. Frederic Villiers
Frederic Villiers (23 April 1851 – 5 April 1922) was a British war artist and war correspondent. Along with William Simpson and Melton Prior, Villiers was one of the most notable 'special' artists of the later 19th century. He may have been the model for the Kipling war-artist character, Dick Heldar in '' The Light that Failed.'' Biography Born in London, England on 23 April 1851, Villiers was educated in France at Guînes situated in the Pas-de-Calais. Between 1869 and 1870, he was an art student at the British Museum and in South Kensington, and in the following year at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1876 while walking down Holborn, he noticed a crowd reading a poster of an evening paper stating that Serbia had declared war on Turkey.
