A by-election was held in the Tasmanian Legislative Council division of Pembroke on 4 November 2017. It was triggered by the resignation of sitting member Vanessa Goodwin, who was diagnosed with brain cancer. Background The electoral division of Pembroke is located on the eastern shore of the River Derwent in Hobart. Vanessa Goodwin, a member of the Liberal Party, was elected on 1 August 2009 at a by-election to replace Labor member Allison Ritchie who had resigned. Craig Farrell (politician)
Craig Maxwell Farrell (born 28 January 1964) is an Australian politician, and a member of the Tasmanian Legislative Council representing the seat of Derwent for the Labor Party. In the 1980s, Farrell hosted ''The Cartoon Company'', a Saturday morning cartoon programming block on TasTV, with a costumed character called "Boss Poss". From the 1990s, he was a television sales executive and real estate representative. Farrell was elected to the Legislative Council in a by-election on 7 May 2011 following the resignation of Michael Aird in 2010. He also served as a councillor and Deputy Mayor of Derwent Valley Council until October 2011, and was an electoral officer in the New Norfolk office of federal MP Dick Adams. Larissa Tahireh "Lara" Giddings (born 14 November 1972) is a former Australian politician who was the 44th Premier of Tasmania from 24 January 2011 until 31 March 2014, the first woman to hold the position. Born in Goroka, Papua New Guinea, she was a Labor Party member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly seat of Franklin from 2002 to 2018, and was the party's leader during her period as premier, replaced by Bryan Green after her government's defeat at the 2014 state election. Elise Nicole Archer (; born 25 March 1971) is an Australian lawyer and politician who is currently the 63rd Attorney General of Tasmania. She is also Minister for Justice, Corrections, Environment and Parks and the Arts. She was a Hobart city alderman between 2007 and 2010. She unsuccessfully stood as a Liberal Party candidate in the Division of Denison for the 2006 state election. She polled 3.2% of the primary vote, fourth on the Liberal ticket. Brian Wightman
Brian Neal Wightman (born 9 January 1976) is an Australian politician who served as Attorney-General of Tasmania from 2010 to 2014. Wightman is a first-generation Tasmanian of Northern Irish descent. His parents William and Mary migrated from Belfast, Northern Ireland, to Tasmania in 1971. He is married to Katie and they have two children, twins William and Beatrix, who were born on Christmas Eve, 2008. He was educated in Launceston, Tasmania and attended Trevallyn Primary School and Riverside High School before graduating from Launceston College in 1993. Wightman studied to become a teacher and obtained a Bachelor of Education in 1997 and a Master of Education in 2004, both from the University of Tasmania. 2018 Tasmanian State Election
The 2018 Tasmanian state election was held on 3 March 2018 to elect all 25 members of the Tasmanian House of Assembly. The four-year incumbent Liberal government, led by Premier Will Hodgman, won a second consecutive term. It defeated the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader Rebecca White, and the Greens, led by Cassy O'Connor. The Jacqui Lambie Network also competed in a state election for the first time, though the party did not win any seats and its leader Jacqui Lambie did not stand for election. The Tasmanian House of Assembly (the lower house) has five divisions with five members each for a total of 25 seats, 13 of which are required for a majority.
